Pearl's new semi-slant razor - Pearl L-65 now available

Pearl has now opened up sales for, what I believe, its first semi-slant razor - The Pearl L 65

L-65-Semi-Slant-2.jpg

Razor Specifications:
Handle: Stainless steel (316L)
Head: Special Zinc alloy
Color: Matt Nickle
Height: 10.5 cm
Weight: 107 gms
Handle: Height 10 cm
Handle Weight: 62 gms
Head Height: 1.1 cm
Head Weight: 45 gms
Head Type: Close Comb semi-slant (Special Zinc alloy)

This razor currently costs ₹ 799 ( ~ $ 9.64 US).

This is Pearl's first semi-slant. It comes with 10 included blades (the brand isn't mentioned but I suspect it is "The Gentleman").

This razor is priced quite competitively, so I'm quite tempted to buy it just for the heck of it... If the razor turns out to be unsuitable, at least I get a nice SS handle. :c4:

Thanks for posting. It looks like Pearl's version of the early German Mulcutto. Ikon razors did a copy of it a few years ago. Have you ever ordered directly from Pearl? Any issues? They seem to use a service called razorpay instead of paypal.

Ok, I've not been paying enough attention I guess. What is a Semi Slant, as opposed to a full one? One of my favorites is a Pearl OC Adjustable, at the price cited I might have to take a swing

Tilted head slant. Direct copy of the 90 year old Mulcuto Schrägschnitt. @rusty1 nailed it.
I think ikon copied the needlepoint slant, it really was a torsionhobel.
These guys need to come out and design something of their own.

Thanks gents - so if I may restate it, the semi means less of a slant than my others? Building in the Gillette Slide?

Good luck finding this is the USA. For now, I believe it is only available via the Pearl India web site. Shipping would be more expensive than the razor. Maybe it just a matter of time before other that sell pearl it the USA, list the L-65..

Me, I certainly don't have a need or want for it..Nothing negative, just have plenty of great tools..

Good - I don't need another razor :straight:

I have not ordered directly from Pearl but I have ordered many times from other (non-razor specific) sites which use RazorPay. RazorPay (happy coincidence :biggrin1:) is a widely used payment gateway site in India.

Yes, I don't think it makes sense to import this from the US, but maybe if you're importing a bunch of items from India perhaps via a physical proxy it might be worth it for the curious. I recall some people here liking the Parker semi-slant.

Tempting, too bad there's already too many slants here to use, that the postage almost costs the razor, and it has that ungainly long handle. I did go look - Maggard's still has 40 of them ..

Now that this razor is also available in the U.S. has anyone tried it and can report their impressions?
After the Pearl Sleek half-blade razor I bought yesterday, this is another Indian-made razor I am considering for a future purchase.

How does it work on you?

I also like the look of the handle. Not a fan of semi-slants, though. My slants must be twisted like the minds of chaos cultists or I would rather take a "normal" head design.

The opposite is true for me otherwise, I don't like real slant razors with very curved and crooked heads simply don't like them, they must be pretty aggressive I guess.
This idea of Pearl to introduce a novelty by offering a Pearl Semi-Slant razor makes me lean toward the idea of being able to buy it.
I want to read the opinions of those who have it and have already tried using it several times to get an idea.

The Elbrus and clone for instance are wickedly twisted, but got reported as mild to very mild. The Superslant has plates and while at least the L3++ OC is listed as pretty aggressive, I find the Wunderbar to be more aggressive and dangerous, as it slices through skin without warning, it must have a shallow angle or it bites more easily than the SuperSlant, better tactile feedback when one gets into danger of cutting into something.

So, to put it bluntly, they might look wicked, but among the wicked, mean looking boys some are surprisingly mild, while others are even more dangerous than one would assume.

I am still waiting for @MondoJ to hopefully share some insights how the Yaqi Torqx (the mentioned Elbrus clone) really shaves! :)

I am a huge fan of the Wunderbar and Superslant, I lean towards the more aggressive versions, but am fairly sure you wouldn't get run over and killed by a SuperSlant L2. The Pearl here will of course be much more affordable.

There is another somewhat rather semi-slanted slant razor head out there, the Yaqi Slope, based on a design by ATT. Quite a lot like it here, I recently revisited it and found it more favorable than in my unfavorable first attempts, where I quite loathed it.

But I still very much prefer the Razorock Superslant/Wunderbar over my other slants. They are my personal "aaah! so that's what a slant is supposed to be!" gold standard for slant razors.

The thing with slants and aggression is, I find them very skin friendly, more so than the usual razors, while being effective. They demand a bit more attention when using higher gap SuperSlants or Wunderbar, particularly the latter one was easy to bite. But they are pretty smooth till you notice you just amputated half your facial skin. I am actually only half-exaggerating, the Wunderbar sliced away part of my chin skin and I have it on the razor bard, only noticed I cut myself when looking in the mirror, it even took a while till minor bleeding happened. That was impressive in a way, a really smooth cut. :)

I have the Pearl semi-slant. It's a decent razor. However, it's not a proper slant compared to the Merkur 37C or RazoRock Superslant (the other two 'real' slants I have). I rate both of these highly. As such, I am not reaching for the Pearl semi-slant and I may need to put it up for sale in my next den clearance...

I have the Pearl Slant and like any user, take this perspective with a big chunk of salt !

Before I bought it, I saw some video reviews that spoke glowingly of how "mild and efficient" it was. (Mild can be a misleading term !). What wasn't spoken of is the amount of blade exposure, and this has enough positive exposure that it's quite easy to slice some skin off if I don't have a very slick surface to shave upon, and an inappropriate angle for part of the face. (Note, I'm a daily shaver so I don't need a lawn mower kind of razor and I prefer little if any blade exposure/feel). In simple terms it's easy for me to mess up using this razor under my nose and around certain parts of my angular jawline. All that said though the shave quality and efficiency is superbe ! (I own these : Gillette Slim & Fatboy, Timeless slant, Yaqi Adjustable slant and a Feather Popular). It has M5 threads so any like handle can be used with it. I found the stock handle a bit thin and slippy so I applied 2 layers of fishing rod textured shrink wrap on over the meat of the handle

I've never used a more twisted design so I can't offer any comparisons there. The semi slant nature is what attracted me to try this and the other two I own. I don't find the shaves last any longer than with any other razor I use. In fact, of late I've revisted my Feather Poplular and also gotten long lasting non-irritating BBS shaves with it like I never did before. I had relegated it to a has-been because I didn't think it was very efficient. Using the other razors though my abilities are better and I'm more flexible in using whatever angle it takes to get the best shave, as opposed to thinking it "should" be used this or that way. Every face is different so do whatever you gotta do to get a good shave.

If you like to use a variety of razors this is well worth the $20 investment. I can't say how it would do with longer growth, but I suspect a couple three days would be no problem.

Compared to the Feather Popular razor, how would you rank the Pearl semi slant in terms of gentleness?

Easily the Popular is more gentile as it won't bite you like the Pearl can. Shaving against the grain under my nose is easy and non-threatening with the Popular and it's low profile head. I just can't do that with the Pearl as the head is rather bulky/awkward for the angle it requires to remain "safe" in that spot. Note that I can get the same excellent shave out of either(except under my nose), it's just the Popular doesn't come with the extra risk the Pearl does.

The Popular was my very first DE razor. The shaves I get with it now are vastly better than when I started ! I had no idea what I was doing really in terms of angles and pressure. I've found it does best now with a shallow angle(the degree of which the blade touches the face.) In other words I hold it more vertical relative to my face, like you would in "riding the cap". The Pearl for reference is the complete opposite, more steep, aka "riding the guard" with the handle more horizontal relative to my face.

FWIW, I use Treet Platinum and Wilkinson Sword stainless blades most of the time and they are fantastic, sharp but relatively smooth. Astra SP stainless(Blue), (Russian) were just as good also. I really could not tell any differences in those three blades. The razor came with Feather blades which I found too harsh at the time. Seeing that the other blades are excellent and inexpensive I have no desire to use Feathers again, for both comfort and economical reasons.

Here's a pic of mine with the grip. I applied two layers for extra girth. I bought the 15mm version, but it was actually 23mm. Still, with a heat gun it shrank enough. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BYF3V6KP?th=1

I tried some Plasti-Dip first, but it was so hot and humid outside it didn't adhere well. Then I looked at the label and of course, not recommended for high humidity and heat, oops.
