Passes

I wanted to share something that I think is weird but it makes sense. When I shave and do like a two pass shave I may get a little irritation here and there but it is small and random. Now when I go to a four passes shave my irritation is eliminated and my routine for that is standard WTG, XTG(1 way), XTG (other way) - this is for cheeks and jaw, and then ATG going North. But for my neck its WTG which is a synth motion shaves outwards from my chin to the side of my neck and down in the middle toward my adams apple, my XTG is straight down, my other XTG is actually the opposite of my WTG but it looks like ATG, and then I finish off going North with my straight from my neck to my cheeks.

I share this because multiple passes actually appear to help eliminate problems even though I thought the less I shave the better. Do others experience this?

I agree whole-heartedly with your observations. If done with minimum pressure, multiple passes can be very effective in achieving a DFS. I do a four pass shave and it has been a month since my last razor-burn episode.

I too do a four pass shave, some times five. Just a few days ago I did a two and the results were less than stellar. No irritation to speak of but the shave was not up to par. I think the muti pass shave actually exfoliates the skin better to make for a really smooth and irritation free shave.

If I skip a WTG pass no matter how minimal the growth, the shave is rough and less than stellar. Adding that WTG really seems to smooth the rest of the shave out. I used to think I could dispense with the WTG, but was wrong.

I get a DFS just fine with no irritation using a simple two pass shave. Each to their own though. So long as you're happy with what you're achieveing.

Is that one pass a uni-directional or multi-directional as dictated by hair growth patterns fccexpert? Just curious.

I usually do a 3 pass shave. WTG and two XTG. I rarely got ATG, I get DFS to BBS in spots. I have done a complete 4 pass shave and have gotten BBS in 95% of the face-for me BBS only lasts 3-4 hours until I can feel some stubble, irritation is certainly more with a ATG pass.

With a normal straight that is nice and sharp, I can usually do a three pass and get DFS with BBS in most areas. To get the last bit requires magic and a special corn dance at midnight - so I only do it during the Solstice and with lots of grain alcohol. I can use a Feather AC with a new blade and get near BBS with two passes. With a regular straight, I do the normal wtg, xtg, atg. With the Feather, I do wtg and a combination of xtg (cheeks) and atg (neck).

However, I get obsessed at times and probably do a couple of mini-me passes without lather to touch-up things - especially with a regular straight.

If I do more than three passes with a regular or more than two with a Feather, I will usually get a bit of razor burn. I can tell if I was naughty because my first splash is Canoe scented alcohol. Whhoooo boy, will that wake you up if you over do it!
