Out of all our AD's

What would be the most idiotic AD to an outsider

  • More brushes than the Avon lady

  • Enough razor blades for 7 lifetimes

  • One face, 37 DEs, SEs and Straights?

  • More varieties of aftershave than Baskin Robbins has Ice Cream

  • Hones are just rocks, right?

  • How many cows died to make all those Strops?

  • Why do you have 3 each of every Soap and Cream?

  • Other

Which do you think seems the weirdest and most irrational to an outsider and why?

I think when you're in it too deep, it's hard to look objectively at the disorder. So maybe all of it is actually extremely strange. But to be less general and more specific:

My wife thinks it's kind of odd that I get all these packages. She always says to me, "you got another package from India; you got another package from Turkey; you got a package from a cosmetics store in New Jersey." Then I just try to ignore the statement and hope there are no follow-up questions.

I guess it's kind of strange. Before taking up this "hobby," it was rare for me to receive parcels from faraway locales. Just my two cents anyway.

Lol I agree. However what garners more withering looks of disdain from your wife? Maybe I should have added an "all of the above" choice!

Probably the huge reserves of razor blades.

When I chat to most of my mates they understand that I may have a few different soaps as moods change, same with AS but the resrves of blades they think is just weird.

Brushes.
I can see good reasons for each of the other ones.
I just can't see having more than 2 brushes.

I have to agree. Having multiple brushes would seem the strangest to an outsider. They would likey view it in the same way as having multiple tooth brushes, or multiple hair brushes; in other words logic tells you one should be enough, two if you absolutely need to have a backup.

Soaps, Shaving Creams, and Aftershave can all have different scents. You can quickly show them the different kind of razors, and explain they all shave differently. The exsessive amount of blades they will just chalk up to hoarding. With the previous items they might not think you are too kooky, but brushes all have the same purposes, so selling someone on minor differences between them will be a hard sell.

I cannot imagine my late grandaddy looking at my den and understanding why I have more than one of anything...(from what I vaguely recall he was a shaving zen minimalist; tech, Wilkinson blades, palmolive stick, old spice & ONE brush)

He likely only had enough gear to perform the mundane and necessary task of shaving daily. We are weird and have turned that mundane task into a hobby! So, you're probably right that he'd look at your (and most B&B people's) dens in disbelief!

I too think that large stashed of de blades that are still in production might look strange to an outsider. Hardware like brushes and razors could easily be seen as collectible so not so weird. I am guilty of SCAD and can also see why having 5 years worth of product would seem bizarre to someone.

I'd say the number or DE's, SE's or straights.

Brushes: Women use all types of brushes to apply their makeup so it, imho, is easy to spin the need for multiple.
Razor Blades: Simply stating that buying in bulk saves an incredible amount of $ would justify this.
Aftershaves: This would be similar to colognes, and I don't know any person or woman who has just one....and FWIW I've been in a few different females bedrooms.
Hones: Okay, this may be a bit hard to explain....unless someone really understands how you sharpen a knife in general.
Strops: Look at your lady, and explain these are similar to belts. Why does she have soo many? Okay, another hard one to explain.
Soaps/Creams: My lady has 3 different types of shampoo's active in the shower. How many of those makeup cases with multiple colors? How many different makeup products? Exactly.
Other: This is so broad, time to apply the skills of a salesman!

7 Brushs Boar, Badger, Fake and Nylon.
nearly 500 or more I lost count of SE and DE Blades.
Other than some swap meet creams and pucks I have a ton of VDH Deluxe, Williams and Arko.

Stockpiles of blades, carefully sealed with desiccant, and dated with permanent marker - inevitably leads to uncomfortable discussions on Shavepocalypse and the evil forces that abound. Outsiders look bewildered and can't grasp these truths! :cursing:

I see razors and brushes as collectables. Also, they don't go bad, and are used from time to time. Blades seem reasonable priced, can last long time, and will be used eventually, so I don't see a problem hoarding them. I voted for stockpiling soaps and creams. They're not collectables, they eventually lose some of their properties with time, and I believe there always will be some fine shaving soaps and creams available. So, it seems unreasonable to stock up too many of them.

Since I'm up to about 25 razors now, I don't think it's that odd, but I can see how others would (including those that live in the same housal area)
Creams and soaps hoarding takes up too much room - makes it hard to hide.

I didn't vote for brushes, but thinking on it more I have seen a few photos on here that looked like Trouble With Tribbles....

I think an over-abundance of razor blades is a bit over the top. Same with brushes.

You can never have too many razors!

I voted for brushes. I've had up to 4 at one time, but traded one once i realized i was really only using two (the other is my first, that doesn't get much use, but sticks around for sentimental reasons). I can see arguments for stockpiling blades...buying in bulk its cheaper. Soaps/creams/ASBs...different scents for different moods, weather, etc.. Even razors...I've got 6 in the rotation and they get used based on growth and how aggressive of a shave I want that day.

Well...that is my logic. An argument could probably be made that I'm too cheap to collect expensive brushes.
