Our Nephew - a Tribute

Our 4th of July this year was very different than the celebration that we had planned. Instead of the usual backyard cookout with family and friends, followed by fireworks in the evening, we attended the funeral for our nephew, Jared.

Jared was serving in the U.S. Army, deployed to Afghanistan, and his motorized patrol was attacked by insurgents using small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. Jared and another soldier died in the attack.

We are proud of Jared, who was serving Army Airborne, had previously been deployed to Iraq, and was issued the Bronze Star for his sacrificial actions.

The picture below was from a newspaper article online, showing Jared on his way home as he arrived on the east coast.

We also appreciate very much the Patriot Guard, a group of bikers that attends funerals for soldiers, paying respects and protecting the family from possible protesters, who did show up but had no impact as they were not seen by many, and not seen at all by the family. With over 20,000 members on B&B, there's a possibility that some of you may participate in the Patriot Guard, and if so, our family's heartfelt "thanks" goes out to you. The picture below, of the Patriot Guard leading the funeral procession into the cemetary as well as standing and holding flags along the route, was taken by our hometown newspaper, and was wrapped around the entire front and back page so that you had to fully open the newpaper to see the full picture. So many others joined the Patriot Guard with flags that the streets were lined on both sides for many blocks. It lifted the spirits of our family more than anyone can imagine.

And of course I want to express our appreciation for those of you who are currently serving, and have served in the military to ensure we continue to have the freedom that is even more precious to our family today.

I hope that it is okay to post this type of thread. I just want folks to know that Patriotism is very much alive and well today, and I believe that is just as much true in other coutries around the world as in the U.S.A.

Thanks.

Hi Randy, this hit close to home. My boy just returned from Iraq after a year. I am sorry for your loss. I hope you and your family find peace during this unsettling time.

Randy :
Again let me send my condolences to you and yours....

The loss in this action can not be felt by many in this nation. As in previous wars many of us have lost close friends and relatives. It is never easy.

I also send out a heartfelt thanks to all our current serving protectors and wish them God Speed.... and to all who proceeded them in their service.

Again Randy....wishes to your family

I deal with many Canadian Forces members coming back from Afganistan.

We appreciate all the sacrifices that are being made over there.

I am very sorry for your loss. I hope that you and the rest of Jared's family find some solace in the obviously overwhelming response in your community to this young man's death. Patriotism is indeed alive and well. May Jared rest in peace.

There is no greater sacrifice. Sorry for your loss and grief.
I am glad that these people were able to be there for the family, to express solidarity and respect.

You and your family have my deepest sympathy.

Our son came home from the Gulf a few months ago.
For us, removing the blue star from the window was a very happy occasion.

I am truly sorry for your family’s loss.

I am very sorry for your loss, and I want to thank your entire family for your sacrifice. I am very proud of your nephew. G-d bless all of our service men and women.

Here are some words offered by our greatest President to a Gold Star mother during the Civil War. Although the case took some unexpected turns, the letter is immortal.

Executive Mansion, Washington, Nov.21, 1864.

Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

A. Lincoln

Your nephew very much represents what is right and good in the world.

(sorry . . . words fail to convey my intense feeling on this)
