I've heard about the cooling powers of this concoction, however, I underestimated it's true nature!
I picked up a bottle of Osage Rub this past weekend from Merz Apothecary. Tried it for the first time today, this morning, and I'm still thawing out! Performed my usual routine with my homemade preshave oil, lathered with Benton Clay Lavender (wonderful stuff), did a 3 pass shave, witch hazel, and a cold splash. Then it came time to apply this stuff.
Upon opening the bottle, I was greeted with the menthol from a million halls cough drops wafting in the air. It's odd green color somewhat reminiscent of Absinthe. I poured a liberal puddle into the palm of my hand, rubbed hands together and applied. My first thought was, "this stuff is cold, despite having been stored at room temperature". I then proceeded to clean up the vanity, not thinking much other than the fact that "this stuff is nice, a bit tingly". After about 3 minutes, I noticed things getting chilled, super-chilled even. I finished cleaning, and was thinking "WOW, this stuff is VERY cool". My eyes were starting to even water. To cut a long story short, nearly an hour later I was wondering when my face would warm back up, and when I would regain feeling! My hands, specifically my knuckles and the areas between my fingers were even super cooled!
There wasn't what I would call a lasting fragrance to speak of. I ended up putting on my Clubman a bit later in the day, which seemed to reactivate the menthol cooling, freezing my face again.
This stuff is bloody amazing, and needs to be used with caution. I really splashed the stuff on, soaking my face with it. Probably a mistake. I would HIGHLY recommend this for use on those days where ones technique has had to take a back seat in favor of speed, resulting in a fair bit of irritation. Osage will most definitely cool things down! I could see this stuff being very effective on sun burns as well, perhaps too much so!
If you're looking for a cold splash the likes of using nitrogen cooled menthol, than this is the stuff for you! Use with caution though!
