What's new

Ordered 4 new sticks!

Well thankfully July is here and my mini shave purchase hiatus is over! I feel a great amount of respect and PITY for those of you involved in the whole gentlemanly restraint sabbatical! So today I ordered 4 shave sticks that I have yet to try!

La Toja and Palmolive from WCS

and

Derby and ARKO from Amazon!

I can't wait to try Arko! These polarizing products are really the funniest thing about B&B IMO. I will follow up with my impressions when they all arrive!

I have Speick and love it! Valobra is on the short list but I do not know if I want to try Irisch Moos considering that, if I love it, it will be a bittersweet discovery.

I ordered Derby because I read about it on here and it was described as similar to Arko but sans the overbearing scent.

For my humble nose and face, Derby and Arko (as well as Tweex and GZD) are pretty much identical in terms of performance and scent. YMMV of course!

I'd also add Valobra and Speick! :wink2:

I have speick already and just picked up La Toja. Valobra is next on my stick list! Your suggestions have yet to fail me sir and I will continue to place a lot of stock in them! Thanks.

Love the La Toja and Arko

Maybe you guys are the ones to ask instead of posting an entire new thread. Just what is the fascination with a stick? I hear of people using them instead of pucks or creams, but honestly, the idea of rubbing a hard stick on my face doesn't sound appealing. Do I have it all wrong?

If you soak the tip of the stick for a few minutes, it will soften up and be easier to apply. Whether or not you soak it, wet the tip repeatedly during application so it glides over your skin. But you didn't get it wrong. I like La Toja sticks, simply because it's a very good soap. A stick is handy for travel, but other than that I don't find it more or less appealing than a puck of the same soap.

That's because you haven't seen your own face when you smell it for the first time. Works great, smells like ***.

You'll enjoy Speick.

The only advantage aside from travel use I can think of is with a stick you're loading and building the lather directly on your face, gives the soap more time to soften your beard compared to loading and building lather in a bowl. But yes, not everyone's cup of tea.

I've tried Speick, Palmolive, Arko, and valobra and I can say that valobra is my fav by a mile. I wish they offered it in pucks.

It also comes in menthol. I dunno if it's the same thing, but I have the menthol one and it lathers easier than my Bigelow. The rest I think you may have to use a cheese grater.

It might not sound appealing, but you've got to actually try it to know what it's all about. I didn't think it sounded very great either before I tried it, but I prefer sticks to pucks now. You can always use a puck as a stick to try it out (more than a few people do this anyway with things like MWF).

I've found that wetting the stick isn't really necessary at all if you make sure your face is very wet before you apply it (which is a good idea anyway).

That's a completely different soap than the stick. Same brand, different product.

You need to put Wilkinson Sword on your future stick purchases as It's a great performer. The awesome blue color of the soap is a bonus.

Exactly. The other almond and menthol soaps valobra makes are italian soft soaps similar to cella. The soft soaps irritated my skin but the stick is excellent. I believe that valobra makes art of shaving soaps for them and the valobra stick is the same exact soap just with their own scent.

The company that makes the Valobra stick also makes soaps for AOS and C&S, both of which come in pucks. Of course the scents are different, as well as the price point.
