Opinions /info wanted: Gillette black beauty with plastic base plate .

I've been looking at super adjustables (black beauties) and I've seen a few that have the black plastic base plate. Are they any good? Do they feel robust? Are there any known issues?

I have one and it is stuck at setting 8. The plating on the head and baseplate are in fine shape but there are some scratches on the black handle. It definitely seems "cheaper" in construction than my Fatboy and three older Slim adjustables. It is noticeably lighter as well. I haven't tried shaving with it but I'm sure it will be fine, for me anyway, even though it is forever on "8". I weighed them just to be sure: the plastic comprised adjustable weighed 58 grams, the normal Slim adjustable was 71 grams and my Black Beauty (non plastic) was 69 grams. So there is a difference in the weight despite having a longer handle.

The Black Beauty I have has the plastic base and it is one of my favorite razors. It shaves the same for me as my slim adjustable but I like the looks of the black razor better. I have never had any problems with it and I use it quite a bit. As always YMMV though.

i picked up a slim thats stuck on one. I want to see if I can fix it when it arrives. There's a tutorial here in the wiki. If I can fix it I'll post a thread. If I can't ill keep my mouth shut ;-)

They are cheaper on the bay and elsewhere. I might have to try one.
You guys seen the Russian copies? They claim they are NOS.

Good luck. Hope you get it working. I tried lubricant and it's still stuck. I figure I'll leave mine stuck on 8, it's not too terribly aggressive anyway. Maybe I'll give it a go tomorrow and post how the shave went.

At what year did did the baseplate on the BB change to be black plastic?

IIRC it was 1978.

To the OP, I have a 1981 as a birth year razor and it feels very robust, very much a 'real' razor. Shaves the same as well as the rest of the Gillette adjustables and actually looks pretty nice. The plastic base plate is very thick and substantial.

Wow, I've been away from B&B for ages!

Thanks tfinch, that's just what I needed to hear. I love all the Gillette adjustables but I don't have one of these later models.

I'm off to ebay :)
