What's new

Ontario Cutlery Co.

I've been looking for a straight for a while, and found one recently at a flea market.

One side says "ALWIN"

the other "ONTARIO CUTLERY CO. // GENEVA, NY U.S.A"

I'll posts pictures as soon as I can; anyone know anything about this manufacturer? I did a search but found nothing.

Sounds suspiciously like a genco, pictures would be helpful.

You will find a lot of companies, churned out razors under different names.

I have one razor from ontario, a prima and it's an bit of an unkown razor, most certainly solingen and happens to be one of my best shavers.

Hello, from what I understand, the excellent U.S. company Genco used to make Ontario cutlery. I would ask Joel though, just to be sure. I'd also get a professional to get it shave ready sharp.

Yeah, I plan to get it professionally honed. No idea who I'll get it done with though.

Here are some pictures, best I could manage. Have yet to clean it...

Nope, not from Ontario. Just want to know if this would be a good starting razor and if anyone knew anything about it and the manufacturer.

From what I understand, they were Genco's model that ran here in Canada, which is weird, because you occasionally find Panamex, a Toronto Straight Razor company, being made in Soligen. It is all very weird.

Does anyone know more about the Genco company and straight razors in Canada?

Genco makes sense, because of their heavy influence on the East Coast of the United States, but why would PANAMEX be made in Solingen?

I seriously doubt that the "Ontario" in the name has anything to do with Canada. In fact, Geneva, New York, is in Ontario County. Additionally, there were many cutlery companies in New York State and Massachusetts. I'm guessing that Ontario Cutlery was just another one of those companies.

As far as the razor itself, it looks like it could clean up nicely with some work based on a quick look. I would not recommend doing so for your first straight, though. Get something that's ready for you to use and that you know has been honed by someone with experience. Save this one for later restoration or pay someone to restore it for you. It has a spike point, anyway, which is just one more thing to watch out if you're just trying to learn. Save the spike point for later.
