One Piece Scale

I've been wanting to attempt to make a one piece scale and have been using some left over horn, which didn't work because I had already cut them down to width and I couldn't clamp them down. So I brought a block of cocobolo but I'm using a miter saw to make the vertical down cut but it splinters the wood.

Anyone have any suggestions on maybe another blade to pick up at my local hardware store?

Make sure you're using a crosscut blade.

Apart from this, there's not much else you can do to avoid tearout. Cocobolo can be brittle and a miter saw is not the best tool for the job. I've achieved the best results using a thin kerf crosscut blade and a holder jig on my tablesaw then using a band saw to clean up the end.
