Yeah, we're in the "why not just try it?!" zone of the discussion. Which could have come first. Start with a quality but not expensive Thayers witch hazel, bay rum or Clubman, Proraso, Tabac, etc.

I would say the natural progression when technique is down is to go for a more aggressive razor & achieve an irritation free, close shave in less passes.
Your technique may be perfected, but whiskers, just like rust, never sleeps.
