What's new

On the road again - Germany

Gentlemen, I am out traveling again in Germany and when packing thought "what soap should I pack, keep it small, because I will buy, buy, and buy while in Germany and later in Spain".

So looking in my supply I decided to grab a stick of Arko, and a small plastic container with a screw lid. Put the stick in the little cup and it came up to about half....so out comes a knife and about 5 or 6 seconds in the microwave. Press it down in the little container and I have a very light 1/2 stick of Arko for my carry on hand luggage.

I had not used my Arko for a few weeks trying to finish up some small amounts of cream and soap (so I would have more room for new purchases :) ). I have been in Germany 3 days now and had forgotten how well it works! I just don't get those who don't like the smell, or complain that it's inexpensive.

Now I have to decide if I really want to spend the money on other soap/sticks when I can get Arko for next to nothing and get such a good shave!

OH - and I was telling a friend here in Germany about the joy of a brush, warm lather, and a DE. We were talking last night and he was complaining that he did not like the blades he was using (will go nameless) so this morning I am going to give him a few of my Feathers and get him hooked on those. I wish I would have brought a couple of sticks of Arko for him!

In a little less than two weeks I'll be out of Germany and off to Lanzarotte in the Canary Islands! Let's see what shaving "stuff" I can find there and can't live without :) Then explain to SWMBO :)

Best to all!

Glad to hear the Arko is working out. I would not risk microwaving it myself: it might scorch, and Arko is usually soft enough to manipulate easily.

Arko is good stuff, but if I were in Germany I would be filling my boots with Wilkinson sticks. You should be able to find them at Rossman stores. Germany_Shaving_supplies might spark some more ideas. Enjoy the trip.

Germany eh? At least be sure to find Palmolive sticks, Wilkinson Sword (the stick, NOT the puck), and Speick.

Since you are going to Spain as well, find yourself La Toja. This happens to be one of my favorite sticks. The Lea stick should be good as well, but I have not tried it as yet.

too much shave stuff in germany!
speick, palmolive, shavemac, not to mention 4711, olivia, others!
and certainly razors in solingen!

dont forget that tabac can be had for pretty cheap over here. where in DE are you touring? you passing through Munich?

I have picked up some Tabac and Speck already. I have yet to see Wilkinson stick, will keep an eye out for that. As to the microwave and Arko as long as its only a few seconds I have not seen any problem.

Currently I am near Bremen, will be in Oldenburg Sunday, Hude-Hatten on Monday, Emden for two days then Braunschweig for two days. Off to Bayern and Frankonia Nürnberg, Regansburg, Beratzhausen, Bamburg, Straubingand Burgwenting. Then Lanzorotte! My time in Munchen will only be at the airport :-(

You can't go to Germany without picking up a few pucks of Calani, one of the best soaps you'll ever find. I recommend Classic Havana, Dubai, and Oriental Plumb. Klar and Tabla Rasa are great, but are available from online merchants in the US, but you have to order Calani from Germany, and pay postage. There should be a warning on the pucks: once you use it, you're hooked and want more, and more...

Do you know what type of store sells Calani? I have been in Rossmans and a couple of other shops and not seen the brand.

Thanks in advance!

Calani is not available in local stores in Germany; You will have to go to Wedemark near Hanover, where Cathy, the owner, opens her shop 2 or 3 times a week. Otherwise via internet.

The charge is 4.40€ for delivery within Germany regardless of how much soap you order. If you were visiting Berlin I'd offer to order you some and you could collect it from me on your way through... maybe next time?

Not going to make Berlin this time around. I will be heading to the south in 2 or 3 days. Then off to Lanzarotte for some red wine :wink2:
