What's new

Old Spice shaving mug question

I've noticed some demand for what look the the more recent ones OS made (the shorter vs taller ones). I'm curious what the demand for them is, since the soap itself is very rare? Just for show, or for new soaps? Just curious, thanks.

I'd say the Old Spice mugs, both the old style and the newer, are in demand mostly because they are so iconic.

The association between "Old Spice" and shaving mug in the USA is pretty strong, and even somebody who won't know a scuttle from a coffee cup, or a Plisson from a make-up brush is likely to see an Old Spice mug and know it's for shaving.

I did a "What do you have in your Old Spice Mug?" thread not too long ago, and was surprised by the number of people who had real Old Spice soap in those mugs.

I have one old style mug that houses some DE razors on the counter for show, and two new style mugs that house Tabac (grated from a stick) and vintage Old Spice soap. I just picked up another for a song (a first for me) and I am debating what to do with it.

My plan with the mugs is to keep the one my dad had, a new style made in Belgium mug, and give my two boys a mug of their own when they start shaving.

In short, I think people like them because they just shout out "traditional shaving" almost more than an actual razor or brush.

By the way, I've asked before, but never got an answer to my knowledge...is there a name for the little swoop you rest your thumb on on an old style OS or Seaforth shaving mug?

Here's the old style handle with the swoop:

And the new style, no swoop:

Both pictures cropped from photos on the excellent Old Spice Collectibles site.

I've only ever seen that referred to as a thumb rest. I know that a similar decorative projection on the bottom of the handle is called a spur. I'm curious now too.

Mines got the rounded handle with the thumbspur. It was made in the late fifties to the early sixties. It's got a puck of williams in it all ready to go.

Im on a hunt to find a good replica old spice soap.

I bought some Artifacts old spice mug soap off the bay. All reviews on ebay were good, but there are 3 in the review section on B&B that say its terrible. Theyre from a few years ago, so maybe theyve changed the formula since then. I want something that smells real, not like wearing cheap cologne.

Anyone know of a good replica? or something that comes close?

Mama Bear makes a glycerine soap called aged spice that is really close to the original classic scent of old spice from years gone by.

Have you heard of VanDerSpice??

You take a puck of VDH Deluxe, melt it in the microwave in 10 seconds bursts, and re-scent it with a few healthy splashes of Old Spice Aftershave, or the generic Old Spice Aftershave found at dollar stores, that smells closer to the original. :w00t::w00t:

The end results is a product that performs quite well, and smells a whole lot better. :thumbup1:

Go for the pink deluxe VDH soap? After its melted, you put the OS in it then stir it in or something? Ive never melted a soap. Thanks in advance.

I picked up a bottle of the AS and two pucks of VDH. Also, theyre selling Aqua Velva in a glass bottle now? I saw that on the shelf also.

I got the Classic AS, which is supposed to be the old formula of Old Spice from what I hear.

Correct, melt the soap, stir in the Old Spice, and then allow it to cool, and thus re-solidify. It will melt easier, and have less chance of burning, if you cut the puck of soap into small pieces first.

Also, be aware that you can only melt the "melt and pour soaps", you can't melt tallow based soaps, or triple milled soaps. For those, you can reform them to any container you want by using a cheese grater to mill them.

Aqua Velva has always been sold in glass bottles (well the Ice Blue, and Musk are in glass; the newer Ice Sport is sold in plastic), but this is changing very soon, as the are moving over to "new shatter proof" bottles; this is a great disappointment to most of us. Snatch up the glass bottles while you can; plastic should start showing up everywhere in a few months as the current stock is re-replenished.

Thanks John. It just so happens my old spice mug came in the mail yesterday also. So I melted two pucks and put in about 10 splashes or so and stirred. The final product is great, got an excellent BBS last night with it.

Thanks again!!

-so whens the next week of Van Der Spice? :wink2:
