Old Spice Questions

I've been reading the threads here about Old Spice. What confuses me is some of the thread say "cologne" when I think they really mean "aftershave." So I have to ask. Did Shulton make Old Spice cologne. Or just aftershave.

Also, with these imitations such as the Indian one and the bargain store one, all I can find so far is aftershave. Has anyone seen this as cologne?

Anyway, I'm assuming that cologne will be stronger than aftershave. But maybe I'm wrong. Any help will be appreciated.

Old Spice was, and is, available as a cologne and an aftershave.

Besides the standard Old Spice cologne, there were several variations under Shulton, including Lime, Leather, and Burley.

The consensus here seems to be that the current P&G produced cologne is more floral and powdery, or you could say that the Shulton was deeper and spicier.

I'd also say that the general consensus is that the new P&G OS aftershave has changed more than the cologne, and not for the better.

The knock-off aftershave made by Vi-Jon, marked as "Ivy Club" is highly thought of here, and to my nose smells almost like the Shulton version of Old Spice. Sadly, they don't make a cologne, but a member recently reported that boiling down the Vi-Jon aftershave can result in something more like a cologne.

Here is a link to that thread. Basically they boiled down one bottle and added the resulting "scent" to another bottle of unboiled Ivy Club.

Thanks. I'm a little confused here. I see mention of Ivy Club and Ivory Club. Are these the same. Also, I'm not sure what stores near me might have this. Anyone seen it at the 99 cent store? OTOH, I could make it to CVS. Is their spice cologne the same stuff?

BTW, I searched the Internet and ebay for Shulton Old Spice. I see plenty of places claiming to have it, but they picture the P&G bottle or box. I'm getting the feeling places just call it Shulton even if it is not. So I worry about buying from them.

FWIW, while searching around I found this place: http://www.cr8on.com/. I don't know how accurate they are, but it looks interesting.

Nearly all of the Old Spice knocks off you see sold under the store brands are made by Vi-John. Locally, I can find the product at Family Dollar, and Dollar General. It's also sold by Meijer, and Wal-Greens under their house brand, but for quite a bit more money.

To verify if you have a Vi-John product, turn the bottle upside down. There will be a small Vi-John logo on the bottom of the bottle. :biggrin1:

Ivory Club or Club d'Ivoire is just what people around here sometimes call V-Jon's knockoff Old Spice, which is actually called "Ivy Club."

You can find V-Jon's Old Spice clone at CVS, or at any of the "Dollar" stores. I've found it at Dollar General. The dollar store prices are quite a bit cheaper than CVS, where you'll find it for about five dollars.

It's in a beige solid plastic bottle with a dark cap. A small ship's wheel is pressed on the bottle above the label (which differs depending on the retailer). There are legends of a clear bottle too, but I've never seen it.

If you do a search on ebay, look for "vintage old spice" and you will get results for the Old Spice that will include Shulton. Or just search "old spice" but then you will have to weed through everything that contains those two words. It is true that many vendors call it Shulton when it definitely is NOT Shulton. You have to look at the packaging. The vintage stuff goes for designer prices on the bay and is getting increasingly difficult to obtain. Creighton's (Cr8on) site is an excellent source for the various bottle and packaging designs

I can't address the vintage, but I know the newer version is available in AS and cologne strength. It can get confusing because stores are inconsistent about carrying both, and the box is identical. You have to read the box to see "aftershave" or "cologne."

Yes, there are many listing for Shulton OS that have graphics that clearly indicate the stuff is modern P&G. Also, it's not unknown to get a bottle that's either refilled or "skunked" due to poor storage.

I just purchased a telescope decanter strictly for the Burley cologne inside...not a lot there but what there is smells grand. What a shame that it's going, going, gone.

Every Friday is OS day for me. Today I hit the rainlocker with the "classic" bodywash, the one modern product that hits the Shulton scent pretty dead on. Followed that up with a wonderful shave with a Shark Super Chrome loaded in a humble ball end Tech, with the lather provided with a vintage puck of OS soap out of a OS mug. While I let the lather sit, I brushed my fangs and rinsed with water from an OS coffee cup. The three pass shave was excellent, and followed up with a healthy splash of Ivy Club after shave, a conservative amount of vintage OS cologne, and then a little OS shaving talc, and a little OS body talc amidships.

All this while Dean Martin provided background music...life is good! :w00t:

Wow, that's just about exactly like my day. I'm not set on Friday as Old Spice day, but days when I'm working around the house are either Old Spice or Clubman. I slipped some Clubman shampoo in with my Old Spice Body wash, and I went with the Shulton AS along with the vintage Cologne. No Dino for me, although I did watch "The Wrecking Crew" the other day.

I may just have to borrow this idea from you!!!

Man, that's good stuff right there.

Also, Shulton (not P&G) still produces the old Old Spice scent in India and you can order this in the classic and lime scents in a not so pretty plastic red bottle. But the scents match what I remember as the classic vintage old "spicey" stuff.

The Indian Shulton Lime is pretty good, and I just bought a bottle of P&G OS Cologne and augmented it with some lime EO. Close enough for government work.

I was going to buy some of the Indian Lime OS, but man, the shipping is half the order.

How much of the Lime EO did you put into the P&G OS Cologne, which I believe I can find around here. I like this idea!

thanks,
jim
