Old Bottle Smell

I'm buying old empty glass bottles as replacements for my plastic aftershave bottles. The reason, glass looks classier.

Anyway, some of the bottles have the lingering scent of various aftershaves and colognes.

Does anyone have suggestions for removing the "smell" out before I put in a replacement aftershave.

Thanks

I am guessing that dilute ammonia would do it.

2 parts warm water to one part Muriatic acid - a mixture we use to clean the 'bloom' in glassware we sell in our stores. I guess this is mould that has grown in the humidity, washing it in the normal way leaves an earthy smell but an acid/water wash removes marks, smears and smells.

plastic will absorb odors, but glass shouldn't absorb the odors and can be safely cleaned.

Another thought is to wash it out with some hot water and borax. Borax is made to clean odors but it needs to be completely dissolved. To dissolve borax take boiling water and add the borax and stir. When the borax is completely dissolved it will be a clear solution. Do you have some type of brush that can fit down into the bottle to clean it out.

Another trick that I use for cleaning bottles and containers that have hard to reach spots, (Like my hubbies thermos for hot coffee he sometimes uses in the winter or when we go out hunting) is using a couple of denture tablets. I crunch them up and use a funnel if I need to get them into small openings for smaller bottles. But it works great to dissolve stuff and leaves a fresh clean scent behind that doesn't last forever so it might work great for your needs.

Lotsa different methods here-all sound good. I'll throw in the one I used also.

I saved a few old small Tabasco bottles to make travel A/S dispensers. Drained them as well as I could and then several hot, soapy soaks in the kitchen sink. Caps also. That pretty much took care of residue, odors.

I then put rubbing alcohol in them and let them sit for a day. Drained them, no hot sauce odors or hint of anything. Worked great..

Little Tabasco bottles are perfect for travel--and it's glass!!

I'm looking for a simple solution and your suggestion about soap then alcohol seem to be interesting. Also the suggestion in another post about letting the bottle dry in sunlight sounds good.

Thanks everyone for your input.

Rinse with hot water
Add borax solution as Krissy recommends or use hydrogen peroxide or oxyclean and let sit for an hour
Rinse well with hot water again
Dry by rinsing with alcohol
Air dry overnight

Mama Bears sells glass bottles with atomizers. I also dislike plastic, and I transfer my Thayers Aftershave into a glass bottle!
