What's new

OK. you got me :

So, I started to think about getting a pipe (again), poked around a bit, found a really nice one I liked on ebay from Mr. Brog, placed the order, figuring just a matter of getting somethings to sample in it while I figure out my likes and dislikes (again). Many many years ago I went through a pipe phase, cheap Dr Grabow pipe, some standard pouch tobacco from the drugstore aisles.

It turns out I have not one, but two tobacco/cigar shops in my area, one of them is like 5 minutes from my house. This may not be a good thing. That one has a lounge to hang out in, large walk in cigar humidor, and all medium to higher end pipes ($55 and up). They had a dozen or so bulk blends of pipe tobacco. Nice sort of gentlemans lounge setting.

The second shop actually seems less promising at first. In the city, advertised as a smoke shop, with the advertising indicating it carries the selection of water pipes, glass pipes, etc.. Walking in, it's pretty cramped, lots of shelves with large glass items. Turns out, however, they are a full service smoke shop. Large selection of the other smoking accessories, then a bunch of case humidors with cigars, and cases, racks, and rows and rows of pipes. The bulk tobacco blend selection is so large, they actually have a 12 or 13 page tobacco menu they print out with descriptions so you can take it home and peruse for later purchases.

I picked up a low range medico, an ounce each of black cavendish and two custom blends called black spice and celtic morning. Celtic morning is a Virginia/Burley blend with honey and vanilla, the celtic spice is a dark blend with nutmeg notes. I'll have a variety of questions, I'm sure, as I start this into this all. Seems I'm in at this point. lol

Welcome to the BL! As a beginner myself, there is much to explore. Consider yourself most fortunate to have two promising tobacconist to frequent!

It may have cost you less money to not have joined the shave sabbatical...........

I'll let you know on that part eventually. I know about how much I dropped on shaving in 6 months, we'll see if the Nib and BL stuff comes to that level or not. lol

Welcome to the BL! Be careful, pipes can be more addicting than DE razors, SE razors, shaving creams, shaving soaps, shaving croaps, and aftershaves......

PAD isn't that bad if you are smart about it. If you have the hankering to pick up a certain shape or brand try to find an estate first, will be cheaper and already broken in!

My overall plan is to pick up a collection of 4-5 good smoking but low priced pipes to start. Mr Brog, this Father and Son maker I found today, couple MM's, that sort of thing. Daily use beaters sort of stuff. After that I'll get even more selective and only really get something that is unusual, rare, catches my eye. I have my eye on one (or two) of those MacQueens that are modeled similar to the pipes used in the LotR (and I guess Hobbit) movies. Stuff like that.

Having taken my first spin with a Church Warden last night, I will say that I am definitely a big fan. Perfect pipe for a relaxed, seated smoke. The long stem really limited any unnecessary arm movements. Last night was a cold, clear night in Mew England. I was outside in a rocker just gazing up at the stars. The CW allowed me to relax my arms and really just melt into the rocker. Highly recommend this style of pipe.

Plus: I'm a geek. There is no avoiding it. I've loved The Hobbit and LOTR since I was a kid. In the books, I always enjoyed when the characters discussed their pipes. The church warden definitely fits the vision that I had in my head as a kid, as well as the current vision brought to life on the big screen. For me, this is a bonus.

I am thinking of a less expensive CW to start with, but the MacQueen Ranger pipe was a gimme when I go to pull the trigger on them.
