What's new

Ok...what is it?

So...
Went to the Antique stores this am with the Mrs's... asked around if anyone had any straight razors.... and get the "look"
Happened to run into the "hole in the wall" place...asked a fella if he had any straight razors...and he said... "no, but I have a Gillette back here somewhere".:001_huh:
He went into a back room, and came out with this razor...pretty slim/little Gillette....and then went back to putting his "wares" outside to display.
I grabbed it, not knowing what it's worth... I guess it doesn't matter if it offers a great shave.
Anyone have some info on it?
My guess is a Gillette Slim Adjustable?
The only number's I see related to the DE pic thread is an M - 3 on the underside of it.

TIA for any info

Looks like they have some pretty good reviews...I might see if our local Pharmacy has some blades for this razor... and get a nice shave in later.
I am assuming on the numbers...9 being the most aggressive?

I'm sure you can find some drug store blades for it but they won't give you a very good shave. Your best bet would be a sample pack from West Coast Shaving. Otherwise if you get a rough shave don't blame the razor. Start with a setting of 2 or 3 and work up from there.

I am so glad you said that...because I said.... "what the heck" may as well hit the walgreens and see if they have some blades. Sure enough 10 pack.
Now I shaved Sat evening before going out...and I really did not need a shave...and was willing to wait till this morning to pull out one of my straight's...but figured may as well see what it's all about.
Got a hot shower...hit the scuttle up with some hot water...loaded up the MWF... razor is all set....have it on #1...:glare: I'm not feeling a thing here...2...no bite at all....3... not sure....cranked it up to 7... I guess I am moving some stubble...9... well I can feel a bit of razor bite...but I'm not really impressed....then I see all the weepers on my neck. They are so minute I hesitate to call them weepers.... So... ok... I guess 9 is ok... load up some more soap.... ATG... XTG....then load up one more and make a WTG pass...which produced nothing. Hit the face with cold water...then splash of AV...faceturbation.... huh... actually not too bad.
Now I can't for the life of me get BBS on my neck...but I must say that this razor did somewhat better on my neck than I can do with the straight.
SO... I emailed one of the vendors on this site for a sample pack of blades...and I might use this razor as a follow up on my neck...and see if I can get better results.
The shave was interesting...I'm so used to the "bite" of the straight...that it almost felt like there was no blade in the razor...but after cranking it up...found out otherwise. Now this morning I expected some rampant razor burn...but as of this morning...not the case.:thumbup1:
Overall satisfaction so far...I would give this a 5...but as stated...figure with better blades...some further instruction...who knows.
I can say that I will not be giving up the straights.

What did I pay... 1 dollar at the antique store Sat morning with the Mrs's.
Fella wanted 5... and with the "stuff" the Mrs's had we walked out of there for 7 dollars.

Now I did see this contraption of a razor sitting in one store... must have been a single edge razor...these worth anything? That razor looked better than this one....but had a price tag of 20 bucks on it... I could probably get it for 10...dunno. No one was there that could unlock the cabinet.

Ok, after looking at the safety razors....this is "sort of" like the one in the antique shop....no ceramic handle on it...just metal. These worth anything to anyone...I can go back and get it...but I did not want to spend the money on one if it's not worth the 20 bucks...they were asking for it...if that's what they wanted for it. I believe that's what the price was. My camera phone was in the Jeep...so no pic of it.:glare:

i hate to say you overpaid if your walgreens is asking the same $7 a pack that they are asking here

IIRC they simply put the ASR Personna blades ($1.99 a pack with free shipping direct from personna*) in a package with the walgreens logo

* the box they shipped my ONE pack (with one free sample triple blade disposable i'll probably never use) in was about 4"x6"x3"

Great price on the Slim. If you usually shave with a str8, the SE may be closer to what you are used to. Give the Slim some time as you may still need to get the blade angle right.

Yeah, what I did yesterday was started with my straight...made 2 passes with it, then used the Slim for my neck/chin area...since this is tough to tackle with the straight. As stated...the Walgreens blades are probably not the greatest...so with the sample pack...should be able to see what I like...or dislike.
After I was done with the shave... I must say that the remainder of "stubble" was lesser than what I was achieving with the straight alone.
Still not BBS, but the way the hair grows on my neck/chin... I don't expect to get BBS. Time and practice will tell.
Prior attempts to get BBS was certainly not worth the "burn" afterward.

The safety razor is different for sure... I make a pass...and it does not feel like I am removing anything...then after the pass I feel a very slight sting...then it goes away. Not bad...just different. I will say that to date...since switching to "old school" shaving... I do not have red, irritated, razor burn the next day...which is great. Before the only way I could shave was while in the shower...with a disposable and a can.
Any attempt to shave otherwise would produce 2 day's of terrible razor burn to my chin and neck.:thumbdown

I have noticed that the hair that has been growing back since shaving the "old school" way...is much "thicker" "tough"...if that makes any sense.

Thanks for all the information gang.
