Office Chairs

I'm redoing my office and I'd like to get a new chair. I don't want to spend a fortune unnecessarily, but I would like to get something comfortable.

I'm a firm believer in the Aeron. I don't consider this an unnecessary expense if you sit in the chair a lot.

I had no problems and I sat in it for 9 hours a day for over 4 years. The mesh was wonderfully cool and it is massively hot here. I have heard that the lumbar support cushion thingy can break but I haven't seen one do that.

I wasn't clear if yours is for a home office or not. For home it may be overkill. For your place of business it wonderful. That said, a chair is a very personal thing. You should try to find a place to sit in one.

I bought a Haworth Zody for my office several years ago. It's classified as a task chair, not an office chair, but it's relatively stylish and remarkably comfortable. I'm about 185 pounds and it's held up nicely--no signs of wear yet.

Regardless of the chair you end up with, there's probably an office furniture supplier in your area that will let you demo the chair for at least a few days. I found that to be a lot more helpful than sitting in the chair in the show room.

The Herman Miller Mirra chair is one of the most comfortable chairs I have ever used. I do a lot of computer work at my desk and I have had four back surgeries.

I am comfortable working all day with my Mirra. I had a Aeron for a while but sold it because I could only work for a short time before I had back pain.

I agree with Arg, try as many as you can before buying one.

I've been researching the Herman Miller line myself. I'm not ready to spend close to a grand for one of the Aeron chairs, though. Does anyone have any experience with the HM chairs in the under $300 range?

I'm looking to get a task chair (no side arms) for use at home. I spend about 6 hours a night sitting at the computer and watching TV. My current seating is a dining room chair, and its unbearable, but right now, its all I've got.

Honestly, I think it depends how much you sit there, and how often you need to do so, in order to determine what is reasonable.

For instance, my chair at work is made by Kimball office... which I had never heard of. Most people are familiar with the amazing Herman Miller chairs, but I had never heard of Kimball. After the second week of work, I decided that the chair was so comfortable, that I had to have one. Then I realized that this chair was $2600. No, that isn't a typo.

Would I pay that much for a chair at home? Not a chance. Is that chair worth absolutely every penny of $2600? Absolutely. It all depends how long you're sitting there, and how much you make while you're sitting there.

Basyx VL701ST11 VL700 Series Executive High-Back Swivel/Tilt Chair, Black Leather/Mesh

I have one at work, and one at home. Great chair. Saves on back surgery and downtime. That's why we have them at work. It saves us money, in the long term.

These are usually under $300.

+1 Aeron

I live in the Austin area and there are a lot of tech companies and consequently a good used market for Aeron chairs. I picked up one for home use for $350. They are built well so I doubt I will have to buy another desk chair. I was also able to find one in the Dallas area for the same price. Even if you are not in the same area I would check into Craigslist and see if there is a used model that fits what you're looking for. You will save a ton.

+2 for the Aeron.

Just make sure you get the right size.

I've seen them for about $800 new. It seems like a lot of money but if you sit 6-8 hours a day (or 1/4 -2/3rds your life) it's actually quite reasonable.

+4 on the Aeron.

I'm a lawyer, and spend 8+ hours a day in my chair. After 9 years, my chair still looks and feels brand new.

I paid $700 for it 9 years ago. I am planning to have it another 9 years. BTW, it comes with a 12 year warranty.

I'm sorry, but I just don't picture The Nid Hog sitting down to work.

Throw another vote for a good chair. I've not tried Aeron, but I love my Steelcase.

A good chair may just outlast you and is worth every penny.

If I had to get one now, I'd probably get a Steelcase Leap

With age and increasing creakiness, I've moved from the offhand to the seated position. Prone is next.

I've heard lots of good things about the Leap and also the Think.

That's really great to hear. Sounds like this might be the chair to see me into my retirement! I guess that I'll go out and start shopping.

Thanks everybody!

I'm sorry, but I have an Aeron and absolutely hate it. Hated the lumbar support and took it off. Hate the way it makes my legs fall asleep because of the hard line right in the middle of my hamstrings. I hate that it is too short (and I have the "large"). The arm rests never stay where you want them so I just lowered them to the point where I don't use them. I have a $70 Office Depot piece of junk at home that is leaps and bounds better than the Aeron. The only good thing about the Aeron is that my bum doesn't get too hot.

My point is that you need to go out and try them. Different chairs work with different bodies.
