What's new

Odd question from a newbie.

Hello all!
I've been thinking...I know that blades are possibly the most YMMV aspect of all wet shaving, however; I had an idea.

In trying to find what blades to try now that I've tried all of my original sampler I've found something interesting. Even though everyone always recommends to try as many as possible, many people use similar or even the same configuration. For example, I couldn't count how many peoples' daily shave is EJ DE89 with a Feather blade. Or people who use adjustables and astra sp. Or a tech and med preps.

Here's my thought: With so many people successfully using certain combinations AND everyone else's experiences with different blades, would it be possible to figure out the best blades to try given certain feedback? For example, I get great shaves from Feathers in my DE89 but only on the 2nd and 3rd shaves. First shave is a little harsh and leaves my skin feeling tight for hours and I get irritation and redness on the 4th shave. I also get good shaves from the 1st shave only using Astra SPs. Given that info, is it possible that someone could point me in the direction of a few brands that might work better for me?

I know this is a long question but I thought it could be interesting, especially if this mode of thinking yields decent results (i.e. someone suggests a few and I find one that works better through their recommendation)

If there really is no answer and this truly IS ymmv and I simply have to try every blade on the market to find a blade that lasts for more than 3 shaves and is comfortable for most shaves then I will. I will take no offense. I just thought it would be interesting.

Thanks, as always,
APBT

I see where you're going with your question, and think that it's a good question, but....

The fact is that only you have your face, and only you have your technique. In other words, I would have to say that it's truly a YMMV situation. That's not to say that the blade that's "meh!" today, might not work well for you in a few months (or longer). You'll find that your technique will gradually get even better over time and that variables such as different blade characteristics will mean less.

For now though, you probably need to simply keep track of what blade works well in what razor.

Good Luck in you're Shave journey. It'll only be fun.

+1

I do think that trying Astras/Personnas/Russian blades like Voskhods and Rapiras/Feathers are a good idea, to cover some of the more commonly liked blades.

+2. Save the feathers and try many other blades then you will understand how the feathers work and feel.

To make that info worthwhile you would need to collate a lot of data. Maybe you could create a Spreadsheet and post a shared link on Google Doc's, and then everyone could populate it for you. just a thought.........

Knobby8, that's what I was thinking. I was hoping this thread would lay the groundwork. Great minds...

Part of the fun is trying as many as you can until settle in on which blade/blades works the best for you. At least that's how I have approached it.
