Oban 14

The port of Oban is not far geographically from Islay, but this is not a peat monster. It has a fruity body before the peat finish, but not as sweet and sherry-like as the Highlands and Speyside offerings. Nicely balanced. I passed on Talisker 10 which I have at home. I find Talisker a bit more complex and interesting. Might be a bottle to be purchased down the road.

nice summary of a nice whisky...

tell me, can you expand on your talkisker description, its been a while since i've had a bottle in my cabinet, and need to stock up soon, oban vs talisker vs clyenelish are my choices, I passed on Glenkinchie as its description was more toward an apperitif, and I tend to sip my whiskies after dinner.

Here is my initial impression:

As I sip now, I kinda miss the fruit notes of the Oban! Talisker has more peat on the nose. It has a richer, peaty, peppery body, than the Oban, and lingers longer. Mouth feel is similar. I got the Talisker 10 on a cruise for $40, because it is $70+ in my local liquor store. If I saw Oban 14 for $50-55 locally, I think I'd grab a bottle! I'm rethinking my position...maybe it is Oban 14 that has more to offer!

I just finished up my bottle of Laphroig and I was looking to change it up a bit. I do love Islay's but I was thinking this could be a nice summer time sip.

I am a fan of the Oban 14 -- as you say, it's nicely balanced. I can enjoy, but tend not to prefer, peat monsters like Laphroaig, Ardbeg, etc.

If I remember right the Oban is about middle-of-the-road on the whisky flavor map. For what it's worth.

Oban and Lagavulin are the two Scotches I have enjoyed. Unfortunately, I can't recall the ages of each that I tried. It was a few years ago.

Oban 14 is a good west highland, unfortunately it is overpriced. Regardless, all of the classic malt selections are great. Talisker 10 is one of my all time favorite peatier scotches. I do wish they were all non-chill filtered though.
