NYC 747 (Air Force One) Fly-Over

I'd really like to give you the opportunity to say something like this to my face. Yuh, I got your "big boy" ...

vroddrew, Now, you know you have pissed on the campfire when you get Bill all fired up! If I were you I would quietly forget this thread and hope everyone else does as well.:w00t: Especially B.E.

Because, unlike most Fox News viewers, he doesn't keep his personal vehicle on cinder blocks in the front yard.

I applaud anyone who is sufficiently environmentally concerned to keep his/her car up on cinder blocks. This is a true case of actions speaking louder than words. Seems as though our "environmentally friendly" government is quite comfortable burning up thousands of gallons of fossil fuel flying empty aircraft around the country - another case of actions speaking louder than words.

+1 to that!

BTW for those who are interested in or excited about a "Super Majority" in Congress I feel sorry for you. As others have mentioned that we don't need a division in our country, a blind dedication to one party because its your party. Also just imagine the damage that could be done in one party had complete and total control, the ability to pass whatever they want to and block whatever they don't like. It would be a disaster if any party had that much control, especially if they were the same party as the President. Democrat/Republican doesn't matter. This could be very bad either way.

+1 If this were to happen, they could not keep themselves from being corrupt.

At tonight's press conference, no one asked Obama about the New York fly-over, not even the New York Times. There are more important issues at hand of course, that's why the New York Times asked Obama: During these first 100 days, what has surprised you the most about this office? Enchanted you the most from serving in this office? Humbled you the most? And troubled you the most?

Are you kidding me? This is journalism?

Wow, this turned heated quickly. As for the Fox comment, even one of their best shows, Family Guy, routinely pokes fun at the network and its viewers. I'm surprised it upset so many people. I hope we can get past this as a group.:001_smile

As for the fly-over, I agree it was foolish to needlessly panic everyone, but 1) the staff knew and didn't tell anyone, 2) a flight plan would've been filed somewhere to allow that, I'm pretty sure you can't just drop a 747 into low-level flight in the vicinity of NYC.

I can't help but wonder, though, if this had happened in any other city in the world, would it have been as big a deal? Say, if they flew over the St. Louis arch or the CN Tower here in Toronto? They clearly had a fighter escort, but aren't there routine military flights around the city? Weird man, weird. I hope they got their super expensive pictures and that they look cool. :frown:

Good point Kyle, I am really thinking of voting for only the challengers in this next election. We have to find some way of getting rid of career politicians. Since they won't limit there own terms, it make sense that we vote them out and give someone else a chance. After all that is the way it was meant to be. Citizen legislators who serve a term, and then go home.

I know this is a pipe dream, but wouldn't it be great!

I might adopt your philosophy in the next election.
I think term limits would solve the majority of problems with Gov't raised by both left and right. If only the Founding Fathers had written term limits into The Constitution...
People talk about the growing divide between the rich and poor, but rarely discuss the growing divide between the ruling class and the ruled class.

Where are the photos?
Sue

+1. Let's see 'em, Feds. Where are they? Would you at least give New Yorkers freebies, for putting them through that? I want one. What could be cooler than the Presidential jet slipping between NYC's landmark buildings , or buzzing the Statue of Liberty :w00t:

I heard that! While the politicians were holding hearings, demonizing CEOs for how much money they make, they accepted a 13% pay raise (Jan.2009). And have you seen the retirement package these people get. It seems to me if they wanted to set an example for the rest of us then they would not have taken a pay raise in the middle of a recession. There is a widening gap between regular taxpaying citizens and the ruling class.

I am of the mind that a public servant should be just that.
Not to say that postal workers, police, firefighters, and the like should not receive a fair compensation, but that those in the political arena should receive nothing.

After all, they can ride around in a public vehicle if they need to get somewhere, they can use military transport(those at the federal level) if they need to fly somewhere.

The only thing that would need changing is feeding them. Cafeteria style, which would give some more people jobs, ladling slop to the politicians.:biggrin:

The president gets nearly 400,000 a year. Instead, re-distribute that salary into 4 separate scholarships for students wishing to further their education.

Just plain stupid. And perhaps more frighteningly, the stunt seems indicative of a pre 9-11 mentality.

That is a great insight. That is the thing that bothered me that I just couldn't put my finger on. It's the fear that we have dropped our guard and will be attacked again.

The "throw the bums out" mentality is why we went from a Super Majority of Rs to nearing a Super Majority of Ds, and why we will swing back again sooner or later. It's like a political pendulum.

To your point, I think putting term limits would help. People could run on their ideals and not have to plan a 40 year fund raising strategy. It would also keep rotating in new people who aren't shielded by a Fed salary and benefits. People should not be able to make a career out of political office.

If the president is in a Cessna, it's now Air Force 1.

You are correct though whatever plane the CiC is on is Air Fore one be it a 747, a C130 or a Cessna if he is aboard it is AF1.

If the POTUS flies in an U.S. Air Force Cessna, it's Air Force 1.

I don't think the POTUS would EVER fly on a pure civilian aircraft, while in office, so the question of what a civil Cessna would be called is pointless.

Okay, just to vent on a personal pet peeve... Which Cessna?! The company's been in business for 82 years and currently sells 22 models.

I know I'm picking nits, but "Cessna" is not a synonym for "Light Aircraft".

Thank you, and good night.:001_smile
