Noticed something odd about my Old Type Gillette

I was loading a fresh blade into my Ball End Old Type and noticed that the reflection of light off the bevel wasn't even after I had centered the blade and tightened it down. The blade was centered just fine, but as I looked edge-on straight into the teeth of the razor, I could see that the edge of the blade was making a slight frown. It was the same on both sides. The ends of the blade were curved down just a bit more than the center. I checked with a Bolzano, Astra SP, and Lab Blue and they all looked the same. Is this something that is usually seen in these Old types? Is it a result of them being designed for the old style of blade?

I'm not so sure that they're meant to be perfectly straight. I've noticed a lot of this, and it always seems to be an even curve on both sides.

i think most razors have a bit of unevenness to them if you look very closely. If it shaves well, don't concern yourself with it.

I shaved with one of mine this morning and tried have a good look. I can't notice any frown in mine. I didn't use a loupe, but at least to the naked eye, it seems like mine is straight.

Great shave though either way:thumbup:

I checked the cap on a flat piece of marble tile. There's definitely a slight curve to it, but it's not apparent until you check it against something very flat. It looks like part of the design. I've been shaving with this razor since the summer and didn't notice this until yesterday. It shaves pretty good, although this curvature would probably explain why it's a little less forgiving than other razors. I shaved with it this morning and had a nice shave.

I have yet to check mine, but I wanted to share this story from an old issue of the Gillette company newsletter. Click through for the whole thing, via google books. This story stuck in my mind when I first read it because of the opening paragraph, presenting a theory that still haunts Gillette cartridges today. It is also a nice customer service story: difficult to imagine P&G going to these lengths.
