Just bear in mind that you may eventually want something above 8k, but this is what I learned on and I thought it was great...I have since sold my Nortons in lieu of naturals, but the Norton stones are very nice & user-friendly....Plus there's a LOT of info on how to use them out there...
You may also wish to ditch the Norton Lapping Stone for a DMT...that's what I did & I couldn't be happier...a DMT325 is invaluable if you're going to be honing with any sort of regularity IMHO...
They are great hones. They are kinda soft so you want to lap and keep things flat. And a 12k finisher after the 8 will make for a nice shave. Love my Nortons.

+1 on 12k finisher. If you're going for inexpensive a 12k Chinese natural stone can be had for a steal. They may not be a favorite, but they'll get the job done.
