So basically, the poor man's strop from whipped dog which was sold to me is nearly dead. Well not nearly but I have nicked it a lot. Stupid I know Is it worth trying to sand down or should I try to buy something else? If so, what?
I fixed my practice strop with glue and sanding. It works fine again. I also have a Tony Miller, that is why I fixed the other one.
Scott what grit sandpaper did you use? I'm actually quite upset because I would realize that I was doing something wrong as I was doing it and end up damaging something which I shouldn't have done
I used to nick my poor man strop a lot too. Then I switched to a full size strop from Star Shaving (I think that's the name) and haven't nicked it yet (after over 6 months or so). I'm not sure if the larger strop makes it easier to avoid nicks or whether I became more careful when switching to the new strop. The point is that eventually you have to jump out of the nest. Unless you have the Tony Miller in your living room as a conversation piece, you probably bought it to strop your razors on - no point in depriving it of that task. Naturally, if you are still very new to stropping, then the poor man can be helpful for a while longer, but I wouldn't prolong the process too much just because you are nervous about the TM.
The answer you are clearly looking for here is this:
