What's new

Newbie

Well Gentleman, going to try straight shaving. Ordered from whipped dog. Ill let you know how the first shave goes. (pictures if its gory)

Excellent,

Welcome.

I would do a WTG pass with a DE razor, followed by a WTG pass with the straight, it takes a deliberate stroke (hard to do with a sharp object on your face). Keep the razor pretty flat on the face.

Excellent I'll make sure to do that, yes i have a problem with pressure sometimes. All Advice and suggestions welcomed!!

Lay the blade flat on your face; then as you start the down stroke adjust the angle til you feel it start to cut. Don't instantly aim for cutting stroke, work up to it until you find the right angle for your face and beard. It's not always 30 degrees! Lol!
and take your time and pamper yourself.....sounds a bit girlie but honestly invest in:
a good hot shower/bath
hot towel on your face for a couple of mins
pre shave oil massaged into your beard
good lather with quality soap
then take it slow and steady....short strokes and stretch your face properly.
once your done, rinse in cold water, use an alum block, rinse again and pat dry then apply a good aftershave balm!
job done!!

i started just over a month ago and I'm now having the shaves of my life! Smoother than any cartridge razor and with far far less irritation!

I use a Merkur DE so its going to be hard to set him aside when I begin with my straight! I love the way the Merkur is so effortless I assume straights are even less pressure?

OK its official looks like my first straight shave will be this Friday!

Thanks larry!

You don't use any pressure with a straight. Literally let the blades weight do the work, just guide it.

Think of shaving off the lather, not the hairs. You will need deliberate strokes, though. Don't set the razor on your face and then get it going, as that invites little red lines, if you know what I mean. ya kinda wanna start the stroke a tad before it touches your face, like a touch-n-go on an airport runway.

when I started I only shaved one cheek for several days, until I got the hang of it. Then I started working on my other cheek.
The when felt comfortable, I tried it on my neck, lastly I did my upper lip, and my chin.
In a couple of weeks, I was shaving pretty decent.
regards,
Bil

just go slow, there is no shame in it, my first SR shave was over 30 minutes long (but not a single cut ;)
and remember practice makes perfect

Don't give up!
my first couple of SR shaves were quite frustrating, but it only got better!
i barely nick myself, now, and truly indulge on the shave!
You'll figure out methods and products that work. Until then, do your best and try to enjoy!
