What's new

Newbie interested in Pre-Shave gels or oils. I dont know which one to try first

Definitely try some before you buy a big bottle of anything if you can. I purchased a bottle of AOS pre-shave oil and found that I didn't care for it. Namely, I got oil on my razors and brushes which was annoying. Plus, besides the pleasant smell, I'm not sure it had a beneficial effect. YMMV though.

There are so many to choose from. First decide if you want a gel, cream, or oil. Once you make that choice, it gets a little easier. If you choose an oil, decide if you want a heavy/medium/light oil. If you want heavy, then AoS is as good as it gets. If you want medium, I like TOBS and Floid preshave oil. If you want a light oil, then Truefitt and Hill is very good.

You can also make your own and develop your tastes without spending lots of $$$.

I occasionally use Jack Black's Beard Lube under my lather to good results. It works well for me all by it's lonesome when I'm on the road.

You really need to try a few. Dragan says T&H ultimate is amazing and does wonders - the most elegant scent too. I'm sure that is true for him, but I just tried it a couple of shaves from my sampler pack and threw the rest away - so your mileage may vary. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on Castle Forbes pre-shave, but I'm going to be very unhappy if I don't notice a difference. But that's part of the charm of this shaving adventure - finding out what works on your face.

I like DIY shave oil consisting of 2 oz of EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil), about 1/2 tsp of castor oil, and a few drops of essential oil (tangerine lavender that I got with an aromatherapy kit).

As several people have already said, definitely good to get some small samplers to try out first before committing to a big bottle. Some of the bigger companies like AoS charge quite a bit for their shaving oils so you want to see if it's for you before shelling out for the full size product. For me, it wasn't, I tried a few oils and it didn't really do it for me.
