What's new

Newbie insanity!!!!!!!

I was your typical buy and trash shaver user. I hated shaving and yet I hated getting crappy shaves even more. So long story short I did a little homework and thought I would give DE wet-shaving a shot.

Well now I am hooked! Amazing how damn excited I get talking about razors and looking at them, lusting, dreaming of the day I can rub their sexy nubile bodies across my manly stuble, caressing my face intimately, longing for more, my forbidden lover,,,,,wait I need a moment to collect myself.

Ok,,is it hot in here, or is it my recently discovered and released sense of manhood in this long lost art of shaving the way it was meant to be.

GOD I LOVE THIS!

So heres my stash after only a 2 weeks of looking. A 56 B/3 Red Tip. A 61 G/1Fatboy and a 38-41 Tech. I bought via "THE BAY" for the Fatboy and paid $30.00, but its in very good if not excellent condition. The Red Tip, that was an awesome act of kindness from a B@B member at a steal of a price, $25.00. I probably shouldn't out him as a great guy, Bill, lol, but he IS.

The Tech was just found for $5.00 on Craigslist this afternoon. The gentleman lived 1 mile from me and told me it was his dad's razor during W.W. 2. It looked rough, but I wanted to try my hand at cleaning one up.I just spent 30 minutes on it. It looks great IMHO. That said, as soon as I finish this post I'm headed back to his house to see if he wants it back ,free cleaning and keep the $5.00. as gratitude for the lesson in humanity.

The mug , double walled steel bowl and toiletry container are now shaving mugs to fit the mood of the day. The kicker, each one was less than $4.00 from Home Goods. I need a badger brush and a few hints on what creams or soaps to use.

Love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. All my best!

That's very good! Pinaud is supposed to be awesome, I have to try it one day!

Hey Don. Well on your way is correct. Wait till you have your "magic moment" with the best shave you've had in years. You will simply be beside yourself that stuff like this was lost to modernism. I am certainly no Luddite but the demise of the DE and straight razors as implement of choice for the daily chore is nothing short of abomination. Do yourself two very big favours. First, hold onto the Fat boy. I mean it. Yes, there were hundreds of thousands if not millions made but they are getting pricey, yours in great shape, and no matter what, Gillette pretty well knew exactly how to make DE razors that just flat out work. Don't get me wrong. Experiment with others like the Edwin Jaggers with their newer, EJ brand head. Gorgeous stuff and I want one myself. Second favour? Get yourself a pack of Feather DE blades. Don't worry about cutting yourself because these are allegedly not for beginners. Remember the old Boy Scout rule? A dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp knife. And sharp they are. I have used nothing like them including Gillettes from the 70's when they still made decent ones. If you are already comfortable with the DE then load those Feathers and try them. Remember, blades don't cut you, YOU DO! That sounds silly but it is true. Keeping an even, light pressure on the DE is key. Visually picture the edge of the blade staying in contact with your skin all along its length. And just that. You are not digging potatoes. Imagine the blade taking nothing but hair. Visualise it in your mind. This makes you slow down and not get carried away. Always a good thing. Best of luck and keep experimenting with shave lathers. Just when you think you have tried the best, you have a great shave with something else.

Regards, Todd

Glad to have you join us. Creams - got to have Proraso and one of the 3 T's. I'd recommend a Taylor cream because you can't beat the price. I have not been a big soap guy so I'll let others comment there. A lot of folks swear by Tabac and Mitchell's Wool Fat among others.

Beaut of a set up there!
Love that steel bowl, gonna have to make a trip to Home Goods.

Try the TOBS Lavender Soap. Fills the shave den with the incredible smell of lavender, and lathers like a beast.

Congrats, and Welcome

I blew coke out my nose when I read this . . . burn baby burn

+ 1 on the Proraso

I have also tried and liked some Mama Bear soaps. Rosemary Mint is my current favourite.

The big bottle of Blue Liquide is a good friend of mine as well.

if you want to try a very unusual, very awesome After shave, try Taylor of Old Bond Street No. 74 Original.

If you want a really good healing aftershave, try Speick

Have fun! And don't get too obsessed (although you will)

Trumpers is a rockin' soap. On the lower price scale SCS makes a truly fantastic line of soaps and creams as well.

I agree--I just got the Violet. Stellar

I got the Rose last week. It is a fantastic performing soap and the scent is just awesome!

MWF is another soap I just love but I would recommend the trumpers to begin with as it is easy to lather.

DR Harris and L'Occitane CADE are two more fantastic and easy lathering soaps.

If you wanna go on the cheap, get palmolive or arko shave sticks. They are both tallow based soaps and provide great shaves.

I say, make him take it back along with a couple of free blades and a lesson in how it connects him to his dad. Tip him off to B&B and tell him to read up. Stay in contact with him and let us hear his story in a month or two. NOW, THAT WOULD BE SOME GOOD READING!!! It would also be a great act of kindness on your part.

Selling his dad's razor for a little gas money. Why I oughta.........

I third the suggestion that you bring the Tech back to the guy and turn him on to wetshaving, stop by Wallyworld and get him the $8.00 VDH starter kit. The amount of good karma that could be produced would serve you the rest of your life

Keep that fatboy close, the best razor available, IMHO

Pick up a blade sampler from www.westcoastshaving.com or www.bullgooseshaving.net Finding the right blade for your shaver/face combination is key.

Tabac soap is deservedly well regarded here

good job cleaning up the Tech. I gave my Gold Tech a good cleaning yesterday. not that it really needed it but it was for piece of mind more than anything. I just threw it back in its case to look at
