Newbie in a Merkur Futur

Hi everybody!

I have recently aquired a Merkur Futur razor  (after a year training with a Weishi :glare:), and I'm searching for a good blade to "feed" it.

As I've felt using the Futur razor, it is pretty agressive and I think Feather blades might be a hard-to-dominate combination for this razor.

The other option I am considering is fitting Astra blades.

What is your opinion? Can some Merkur Futur user tell me about his experience regarding the blades?

Thanks a lot in advance!!!

Welcome to B&B!

I can't comment on the Futur as I never used one... My recommendation would be to buy the blades that you liked (like a sample pack) and try them again!

A good blade for the futur is the blade you like the most. If its too aggressive you could always dial it down.

How are you liking the futur so far?

Welcome!

Blade choice tends to be a very personal one. You might consider getting a blade sampler pack, so you can evaluate the options for yourself.

The Futur will perform very well with just about any good blade. If you feel it is on the aggressive side, the Crystal Israeli Persona is a very good blade to start with. Once you get a good feel for the razor, the Gillette Yellow 7 O'Clocks are excellent as are the Iridium Supers.

It is a great razor, although I've to be fully concentrated while I use it, because one distraction means one cut even at the most forgiving setting. If you "respect" it, this razor will provide you BBB's quite easily.

Any suggestion for buying razor blades in europe?

Lately it is getting hard not to have problems with products from the US in the Spanish customs, so I prefer buying in the Euro zone.

I just used a feather in my Futur and have to say it was great! no issues at all, so nothing to fear. I would say that they are as easy to use as Derby's but seem to slice through the whiskers a lot easier, especially with the heft of the Futur behind them!

Have been using a futur for the last couple of months and have found the Gillette Super Thins to be a great blade.
But remember, as with all things, YMMV.

One of the best things about the Futur is that it works well with just about any blade. My personal favourite ist the yellow 7 o'clock.

I rotate between Feather, Gillette 7 o'clock SharpeEdge (yellow) and Super Iridium in my Futur. It is hard to rank the best of these but maybe I give the edge to Super Iridium.

All these blades are available in Europe with good prices. Check out the banned uk vendor.

My favourite blade in my Futur is definatly a corked vertical Derby. It's very sharp and at the same time smooth, comfortable and long lasting.

I have no problem using all my blades in the Futur, it's a wonderful razor that can adapt to allmost any combination of beard or blade. But the Derbys are the blades that stands out as the best for me.

I use a Futur, I have be switching between several of the Merkur I have. I have some vintage as well and to be honest I am using the Futur more and more, I have not used a vintage in a number of weeks.

I guess the point is I am liking the Futur more and more - I only use Feather blades. I have tried others and almost never use a test blade a second time. On a number of them I would pull them half way through the shave and slip in a Feather.

I am sold on the Feather......

Check sellers from Turkey on ebay, i have recently bought a sampler of 30pcs from one of them (derby, astra, astra platinum, rapira, shark)... shipping was very fast, great prices, everything went fine.

"Banned UK vendor"??? Maybe I'm too new in this forum:huh:... could you clarify me this?

Thanks to all for your comments.

As I've seen hangin around in eBay, Astra blades seem to be much cheaper than Feathers (about half of the price).

Do you think the quality of them matches the price difference?

For me its one of those razors which shave well whatever blade you put in it and just dial down if its a bit aggresive, or the opposite, i think the trick is to learn how to use this razor safely more than blade chioce as this will come later on when your an expert on it:001_rollelovely razor which when mastered will provide excellent shaves, and quite a few nicks as well when your test driving it:biggrin1:hope you enjoy your journey.

I could say that the Single Malt Scotch Whiskey Rule applies here, that is, is the older version 4 times as good as the younger to warrant the price hike?

That's a good question, and ultimately the only one that can answer it is you.

I get as good a shave, or nearly so from Astras as I do from Feathers, so for me the price premium is not warranted.

We won't even go into the legendary thriftiness the Spaniards from a certain province are known for. :biggrin1:
