What's new

Newbie here

Hey I am the new newb. I was given a blade for christmas, I was pretty excited about actually. My learned curve has been very steep ever since. I never knew I could bleed so much from such a little cut. Anyway, I am in the hunt for a new one already because I learned that the blade I was given is not the best quality and the person (the wife), thought they were getting a pretty good deal.

I am looking for a Dovo actually and I see that I tend to lean more toward a the wood slides and the horn as well. So if you guys could help me get further educated in this most awesome way of shaving.:thumbup1:

Pic/ more info about the one you have would be useful. Also, there is a huge difference in comfort and effectiveness between a factory and a hand-honed razor edge, even with a good blade.

Welcome, brother!

Welcome to the forum!
The above link is a great resource. You could check out the BST here for straight razors that you might be looking for. Good luck.

Gentlemen, I thank you for the warm welcome and positive advice. I did purchase a new razor which is a dovo. I can't wait to wake up in the morning and shave.

Good stuff and welcome !

Are you satisfied your razor is shave ready ? As has been said, the manufacturer may claim it is, but in reality it won't be. A reputable retailer will indicate whether it has been honed to 'shave ready' standard by them.

Well, the gentleman at "The Art of Shaving" stated to me that it was shave ready and the particular razor I chose was not the most expensive at all but the most popular because of that reason. Te slides are made of African Blackwood, which to me is pretty unique and the blade is of carbon steel. Now, he did recommend that after I clean the blade and slides after use I should apply a very thin coat of oil the blade in order to prevent rust.

Anecdotal information from others who have bought from the Art of Shaving suggests that their razors are not generally shave ready, but I presume it is possible that a particular outlet may have an arrangement with somebody who hones them up for them after they are delivered to the point of sale.
