Newbie brush choice redux

Howdy all, spent some time reading, browsing, and searching, so I'll throw out my questions in my sophomore post on the forums.

Brand new(ish) to wetshaving (owned a cheap cvs boar brush a few years ago with some williams soap to use with my cartridge razor). Just picked up a starter kit in the B/S/T forums, but it's coming with another low cost boar brush. Since it was such a good deal though I figure I can afford to add a decent starter brush to the mix, and still make out for less than a years worth of mach 3 cartridges.

Looking to get a badger brush to start my education with. Doesn't have to be the be all end all of brushes (and it won't be on the budget I'm looking at) just something to get my feet wet with.

I'm looking to spend less than $50 (I know, I know) but don't want to just default to the el cheepo Tweezerman, though I hear it's not all that bad. So far I've been eying up:

Some of the Penworks brushes
The Simpson Special Silvertip (on penworks site for real cheap)
A handful of the low range Omega Badgers (stripey, etc)
There's always the EJ BBB but I'd have to ship from England
I can get a basic Vulfix for the top of my budget - 39 or so.

It's not that I can't afford to get a better more expensive brush. I just want to get myself a well rounded starter kit for relatively little opening capital, try out the world of wetshaving and DE safety razors, and if it's for me I'll happily splurge come christmas time - but until then I don't want to spend a whole ton of money on something that might not be for me (although I have a feeling I'm going to be hooked).

A few extra details (as per the 'what to include in your brush advice post'):

As I'm starting out fresh, I'll play with both soaps and creams, though I'm leaning towards creams - mostly on a whim. I'm going to start learning by bowl lathering, though I'm sure I'll play a little with face lathering after a month or two. I'm a big guy (over 6 foot) with big hands, but I don't have bear hands or anything, so I can deal with holding a mid to smaller brush without feeling like I'm playing with a toy. And as I said earlier, I tried a cheapo boar brush a few years ago, and didn't really like the way it clumped up with soap, shed like a mange ridden dog, and didn't seem to do much of a better job of lathering my face than my hand did (though it did tickle my nose). As far as looks are concerned, I just don't want anything to garish - no deer antler or old whale bone scrimshaw handles, or neon green plastics. But at this stage handle shape doesn't mean much to me (inexperience prevailing).

Any major pros or cons for any of the starters I've been thinking about?

Thanks for taking the time to read, looking forward to learning from the wealth of knowledge here on the boards, and sorry for subjecting you to yet another newbie brush episode.

I love Rooney and Simpson so you cannot go wrong with this one over in B/S/T - a nice price and a big jump from what you have. In fact, a brush you may never outgrow! Good luck! :001_smile

If I were you, I would save up the extra 25 bucks and get a small Rooney in super. You cant go wrong with these, just pick the handle style you like. Chances are, you are gunna want to upgrade eventually anyway. Great deal for 75 bucks, then you wont NEED anything else.

Good advice - the extra investment for upgraded hair quality pays for itself quickly.

Charles over a QED has some brushes in your price range. His web site is qed.com. Call or email him and ask about the QED select brushes. I have a QED Select Pure 22mm that is one of my favorite brush. Best of luck.

I think it's qedusa.com :001_smile

I am putting in a recommendation for the Penworks brushes. High quality gorgeous looking brushes, that perform really well.

I have a 22mm in finest with the cream handle, and couldn't be happier with it.

I ordered one from them last week, and it should be in today or tomorrow. If the OP is curious for pictures of their silvertip, let me know - I can grab some.

I actually swung by my nearest local C & E a little while ago. They did not have any BBB left (go figure) but they did have a Kingsley 8003 pure badger brush that ran my under $30 with tax - and as a bonus I grabbed a tube of the re-branded Proraso from Bath and Body Works right next door. While I'm sure it's not an amazing brush by any standard, that came in at under my intended budget, and should afford me some playing around time while I decide on a course of action and shop for a really nice brush.

Thanks for all the input, I'll revisit it again in a month or three when I'm ready to either upgrade or throw in the towel.

And as soon as I bought that one, and tried it out with the Bigelow and my old mach 3, someone puts a BBB on the B/S/T board for the same price I just paid. *sigh* Perhaps I should start my 'acquiring' even before I get my razor in the mail ...

Good advice - the extra investment for upgraded hair quality pays for itself quickly.

My first brush was a Rooney 3/1 in super (22 mm knot). It works well with both soaps and cream. The handle is very comfortable.

My second brush was a Savile Row 3826 silvertip (26mm knot with large handle). A wonderfully soft huge brush. But it was too large and floppy for my tastes (I could mop my face with just two strokes!). A fiend of mine greedily bought it from me and just loves it.

My third and last brush is a Simpson Commodore X3 in Best (24 mm knot). It also works well with both soaps and cream. The handle is also very comfortable.
The hair is not as springy as my Rooney, but is quite soft and easily whips up lather.

My fourth and next brush is a ?????. I want a firmer backbone brush than the Rooney and Simpson, so I can try face lathering. I think I have settled on 24mm as my ideal knot diameter (or larger if it has little bloom). I also want to use it for bowl lathering with soaps.

I've narrowed my current candidates to either a Rooney Stubby 2 or a Simpson Tulip 3 or 4. Any comments would be appreciated. Anyone selling one of these?

I'd say get the Tweezerman, or a C&E BBB if you can find one.
In my opinion the Tweezerman is hands-down the best value in the shaving world. Use that for a few months while you save up to around $100. Then you can buy an excellent brush that you can use for the rest of your life!
