The bowl is not critical. I use a VdH lather bowl, but any deep, wide coffee cup or Pyrex bowl will do just as well. You can also build lather on your hand, and/or directly on your face.

I've only used the AoS Unscented sample a few times, and I really liked it. It was very easy to lather, even without a brush, and it gave me a great shave while on the road. (I like to take samples with me when traveling, and usually leave my brush at home.)

You can read some reviews of AoS creams here

I face lather with the AoS creams. Couple blobs on the face and swirl away with the brush. It lathers nicely and the brush loads up with enough lather for three passes. it is a nice enough cream, but there is so much more out there to enjoy. This forum and the reviews is a good place to see what others enjoy, and why.

facelather!

otherwise you can lather in a bowl. No experience with AOS creams myself, but you cant go wrong with TOBS or T&H creams.

What do you lather your soaps in? Do you lather directly on the puck as opposed to in a separate bowl?

You can use whatever suits your needs, a bowl, mug, scuttle, directly on your face, in your palm.

I have a large diameter mug that I found at a thrift shop for $0.95. It is one of those mugs that looks too big for coffee and too small for cerial or soup. Works great and the price was right!

I face lather most of the time and bowl lather sometimes... they both work fine. Any old bowl will do.

In regards to AoS shave cream, I find that it is a good product, but not the best and not worth the coin. It lathers really nice, but performance wise it lacks the slickness and protectiveness that I look for in a lather.

Any kind of bowl will do, really. Even cereal bowls. I have a few. My favorite is one that a friend gifted me. It's a Japanese bowl and it has ridges inside. These ridges help build lather much faster than in smooth bowls...much faster. Whatever method you use, just have fun :thumbup1:

I use a plastic salsa bowl from Wal*Mart for lathering creams. The AOS Sandalwood lathers well and provides a good shave. You should also try C.O. Bigelow and Kiss My Face shaving creams. They are less expensive and work just as well.

Face lather with creams, did a hand lather once with some T&H sampler (not a big fan) and I don't see the point, I get a fine lather of the face, just remember if you are using some french creams too much water on your brush and it all runs down your neck before you can do anything about it!

Our stoneware cereal bowls worked perfect, but my wife put the kabosh on using food dishes for shaving. I now use a scuttle. Tried face lathering, but warm scuttle lather has spoiled me.

I lather in a big coffee mug, it must be 6" across and 4" deep. It has a nice big handle that is easy to hold with wet hands. I did look at getting a fancy shaving bowl by the likes or Muhle, CRS or Edwin Jagger, but I'd be gutted if I dropped it.

Another face latherer here . . . dip the tip, swirl it on. Simple.

I have the AOS Lemon and really like it, but it's runnier and pricier than my other shave creams. I can get a couple tubs of TOBs or nearly three of Queen Charlotte for that price. If it were more concentrated it wouldn't be that big a deal, but runny = added water/less actual product in my mind.

I face lather as well and enjoy my scuttle for warm lather for each succeeding passes. There is nothing like warm lather for each pass. :001_rolle

Enjoy your shaves,

Doug

Warm lather is great if you are in a cold climate. If you have the funds available look into scuttles. I just got a Dirty Bird and I love it.

Even if you don't have the funds available, its really easy to jury-rig a scuttle out of stuff you probably already have laying around the kitchen. If you have to go out and buy the pieces, you can do it for well under $10.

And warm lather isn't just for cold climates ... it feels good anytime, anywhere. Even a cream like Proraso that is famous for its icy menthol blast will feel really nice when it is applied warm.
