New Suit Time!

Alright, I have just gotten to the point where I actually need to get a suit. Yes if you couldn't tell I am not that old. I have had suits in the past, but have always either outgrown them or my weight has fluctuated up and down so much that they don't fit after a year or two. How do you all deal with fluctuation in weight and not having to spend an arm and a leg on new suits?

Have you tried to get them altered? I was told by a guy at Men's Warehouse once that you can fluctuate 20-30lbs before having to go up/down in size. Most places will charge an alteration fee when you first buy the suit and then they will alter the suit free for life.

I hate to point out the obvious but the easiest solution is to maintain your normal weight. Exercise and eat sensibly. I know it's easier said than done but if you spend over $1K on a suit it's a good motivator.

Well, beyong the obvious "+1" to Austin's advice ... :001_rolle ...

I'll point out that expecting a suit to "weather the storm" of weight fluctuations (either by being adjusted by a tailor or by "still kind of fitting sort of") is not a good idea.

IF you find that your weight is not yet "stable" and you haven't yet reached that place in your life where you can maintain the same physique, then it may be that you want to keep a few differently-sized suits in your closet ... one for "fat me", one for "skinny me" and one for "regular me".

I have to agree that keeping a few different sizes in the closet is the best way to go. I have suits in my closet that are 43 athletic fits from when I used to work out everyday and now I am a 40 regular. The difference is about 30lbs but not just around my waist.

Some of the materials out there have a little stretch to them so I suppose that would help. Also, if the suit is flat black than you could probably swap out the jacket or pants as needed.
