New straight razor . help needed

Hi all,

Got a ton of questions,

Just received my new straight, and well it looks nice ... but it performs to say it in a mild way lousy. I cant even cut arm hair after a 100 strops up and down.
Looking at the edge it seems a bit of, i hone all my chefs knifes and i can see if the edge is ok or not.

Also i can even shave better with my chefs knifes than with the straight.

So question is, would you recommend me to hone it ? I looked up some videos but i dont know if a 1000 grit ceramic stone would be sufficient?

Also the question that echoes in the back of my head is, have i bought a replica/copy of a straight ?

The straight is supposed to be a solingen hand made, and etching reads razorlution hand made in solingen.

Please help me out, i really dont want to keep using the shavette now :)

Did you buy your straight razor "shave ready"? If not, chances are that you cannot shave with it.

Honing a straight razor and a kitchen knife is not the same. Keep that in mind.

A 1000 grit is good to set the bevel but I would recommend at least a 8k finisher.

Do you have any pictures, brand name, etc of the straight in question, what did you buy? Where? from who?

Razorlution doesn't ring a bell and doesn't sound good to me... Pictures are a must...

The info i get from the box is,

Linder Simbatec handmade solingen Germany, and as far as i am aware Linder is a good company ... but this straight cant slice a grape after stropping ....

Edit looking on Linders homepage it says Germany on the tang not on mine, so guess i been screwed.

Pictures would be helpful. Sounds like your straight is *not* shave ready. There isn't a company that currently sells shave ready straights. You got to pay extra to get the razor to be able to shave.

Here are some pictures for you, what makes me react is that it doesnt state Germany on the tang. I have emailed Linder as well for confirmation on SN no,

I think you wasted your $. Sorry, but I think you should request a refund. I think it's made of steel made in solingen, ground and treated somewhere else and scales assembled in Germany. That's my best guess. If the spine is good and steel is good, it will be okay, but you need to confirm those.

Ok thanks, well what would be the proper way to confirm if the spine is okand also the steel ?

Right now im just a bit dissapointed, and in the mood to place a order on a Dovo instead... The tough part is i would saved myself a 100 bucks if i did this from the begining.

Ill have to wait for a reply from Linder if they confirm it i can start pressuring for a refund. Otherwise i bought me a expensive papper weight.. Sigh.

The gilette is extremly tempting atm

well, the spine just needs to be there. i have seen pics where the razor in certain parts is ground that the spine isn't there. plus the nly way to know if it's decent steel is to rehone it, which then voids a warranty/return usually.

for a 100$ you would do awesome on the BST/hobbyist threads here. whipped dog is also a great inexpensive way to go. before you order anything retail. put a post here or PM someone to get some advice. it'll save a lot of frustration as quite often what you think you are getting may not be in fact what you get, especially when it comes to shave ready.

@rickboone1

Thanks for the offer, but atm i dont wish to waste a single buck more on this blade. Going to take it as a harsh lesson learned and get me a quality razor instead, if i can figure that out :)

But thanks once again for your kindness,
