What's new

New SMN

It's been reformulated. I'm in shock. :scared: Does anyone know what the exact difference is in the new formulation of Santa Maria Novella?

Has anyone used a brand new pot and can share how it compares to the old?

Hopefully, this is a gross overreaction to my beloved croap.

Calling Marco. Is this true? I've not tried SMN. BTW petr, how did you find out about the reformulation?

Not sure where I read it, maybe on another board but its my understanding it has been reformulated with no parabens and no lanolin. Sounds like it bears striking similarity to Proraso soap now since that was reformulated as well. They were always similar but SMN always had lanolin.

This is true, sad to say. Had my first go with SMN a few months ago and fell in I love. I had heard of the reformulation a couple of months ago. I panicked and bought a backup tub of the original. I bought one of the last 3 tubs from Lee razors about a month ago. I can't imagine he has any left. I can't speak to performance of the new formulation but when I saw the ingredients I wasn't about to take a chance. The formulation, from an ingredients prespective is very different. Lanolin is no longer present. Parabens are gone and the menthol is toward the end of the list. These were what stuck out to me. I'll be watching this thread closely because I'm very curious myself to see what B&B's impressions will be.

Can anyone post a pic of the new tub against the old tub? I believe you get less with the new tub also.

I snooze for a couple of months and the unthinkable happens.

I don't believe the tub has changed with the re-formulation. The tub size shrank from 250ml to 220ml with the original formulation awhile back. Not sure when exactly that took place. Both tubs of the original I have are 220ml. I was sent a pic of the new ingredients from a retailer that only had the new formula in stock. Looking for that email now. Will post when I find it.

How much smaller is the new tub? I believe a year or two ago it change from 8.4oz to 7.4oz, without any change to the formula. Is the new-new one even smaller?

Hmm, math. 250ml ~= 8.4oz and 220ml ~= 7.4oz. Okay our stories match, good!

No parabens sounds like a good move. No lanolin should like a really, really foolish idea.

Has anyone used the new Santa Maria Novella? It's a new scent "Toscano", no parabans and no lanolin.

OH MAN!!!! Why do people keep messing with quality stuff. I may have to break the shave sabbatical in order to get some of the older stuff.

So, I got two samples of the new cream yesterday.

At first, I was turned off by the new Toscano scent. It seemed a little sweeter than I liked...and of course, I'm biased because I loved the former scent.

I did a sample lather this morning, but did not shave with it. I had trouble making a decent later, but I was only trying to get an idea of the scent and feel, so I didn't scoop enough out of the very small sample container.

I can tell you this...it DOES have menthol, and quite a bit it seems. Also, there is still a camphorous note to the scent, which pairs well with the fragrance and is really quite nice.

The store I stopped in yesterday was all sold out, if that tells you anything. Of course, they could have only had a couple in stock to begin with, I dont know. I didn't see the ingredient list, but I asked the sales person if the lanolin had been removed from the ingredients. She said that it had not, but the parabens were. I wasn't going to be rude and demand for her to show me the box, though, to confirm.

I am going to use the sample again and actually shave with it to see how it performs. Maybe tonight....

More to report soon

Where do you get SMN in the DFW area?

LAFCO in Highland Park Village. There are a lot of great stores in that shopping center. Hermes, Chanel, etc. You could probably score some really nice samples of fragrances. The LAFCO store used to carry Musgo Real products, too, but they don't anymore.
