New Rooney Emillion 1 - Initial Impressions

NOTE: First Update in Post #14

I grabbed one of these when I saw them come up at Vintageblades. There have been some questions in other posts on these Rooney brushes and how they compare with the Rooney Finest brushes that are no longer being produced. As such, I will post some initial thoughts on the Heritage bristles and do a quick comparison with the Finest knots. I will supplement this thread in the coming week as I use the Emillion 1 and my, soon to arrive, Stubby 1XL.

First the comparison pics with a couple of my Rooney Finest brushes:

Now some thoughts on the Emillion 1. Please note, I have test-lathered this brush a couple of times, but not used it for a shave yet. I will update this thread with additional thoughts after I use the brush some this week.

In my test-latherings, I used Al's "The Bomb" shaving cream. Basically, this is just to help remove the badger smell before taking the brush to my face. I don't particularly like to start my day off with the "wet-dog" smell new badgers brushes have. The Emillion 1 had no problem in quickly producing a wonderful lather. The brush seems to have excellent flow-through and quickly whipped up some very nice lather both times.

What stood out during these test latherings is how soft the bristle tips are to the touch. They have a very luxurious feel to them. The knot does seem to have a bit more flex in it than expected from a brush with this loft. I was expecting little flexibility in the bristle knot, but it seems to have a fair amount of flex. I don't think it is floppy by any means, but am interested in how it works when I use it for face lathering.

The brush has not lost any hairs in my initial test-latherings and the construction and finish are very good. The knot is fan-shaped which is nice in today's bulb-shaped two-band market.

As you can see from the pictures, the density of the knot is good, but not to the level of the Rooney Finest bristle. For those who have used a Rooney Finest, that bristle is really something special and deserves its "Finest" title.

I will say that the softness of the Emillion 1's tips, prompted me to order the Stubby 1XL. One of my favorite brushes for face lathering is my Simpson Chubby1 two-band. It appears that the Stubby 1XL has very similar knot, loft and handle dimensions as the Chubby1. The very soft tips of my Emillion1 coupled with the 25mm knot and short loft in the Stubby 1XL, may be ideal for a face-lathering, soap user. As that one is in route, I will update my thoughts on it, as well as the Emillion 1, later in the week.

Great comparison Chris. Thanks for taking one for the team to try out these new brushes. The SBAD is never ending for you :001_smile

I'm eager to see how the XL1 compares too.

Bravo Chris!

I am really excited to see these comparisons with the new Rooney Heritage Two-bands hitting the street. I picked up a few myself and really like how this grade seems to be soft. I don't typically need something with crazy backbone or density, so we'll see how these stack up.

looking forward to it and how this compares to Roney Finest and Simpson 2-band hair

I love the overall look of this brush, in addition to the very fan shaped knot

That is a great looking brush. What are the measured dims of the knot? It looks to have the "right" amount of density to me.

Thanks for the review. It's a very nice looking brush. There may be one in my future. SBAD is in full swing for me right now.......

Hoo Boy just when SBAD was getting reined in, you have to go and throw some Gas on the flame....

Great looking brush... thanks for the comparison

You'll defininitely have to update us as to how much the backbone of the new Heritage hair compares to that of the Rooney Finest after you've had a few shaves with it.

+1

This brush looks to be almost perfect in my eyes.
I'm feeling the itch already.

Isn't that handle awesome? Like a Persian Jar in platforms. There isn't a day that goes by without me kicking myself for choosing the Victorian over the Emillion.

UPDATE #1
First use of the brush was today. I used Domenico Caraceni shave cream for the shave. I face lather, so I simply put a little shave cream in my mug and loaded the brush there. I do just enough to load the brush but not create the lather at this point. After that, I took the brush to my face to finish creating the lather.

No problems in making a very nice lather for the shave. The brush has very soft tips with a luxurious feel on the face. As I noted previously, there is more flex in the bristles than I expected from a Rooney brush. I think it is worth noting that my other Rooney brushes are all Finest hair, except for a Beehive 1 two-band that is about a year old.

What strikes me is how different this brush feels on the face compared with my other Rooneys, including the Beehive two-band. I've never had a Rooney with tips this soft. The difference in the two-band hair in this brush and my Beehive is quite noticeable. This brush, while not floppy, has some flex in the bristles combined with very soft tips. I actually pulled out my Plisson 12 HMW (three-band) and compared the softness of those tips with this Rooney. I was surprised at how similar the face-feel was between the two. The Plisson 12 has a larger knot, but the softness of the tips on the face is very similar.

I'm going to pull out my Beehive tomorrow and use it, so a direct comparison can be made between the bristles in the Beehive 1 and Emillion 1. From memory, the Beehive has a much stiffer knot with more scritch on the face.

I'll continue to update the thread this week. BTW, my Stubby 1XL should be to me on Thursday and I'll include it in the analysis as well.

This is the EXACT experience I had with my Emillion. After using it for a few weeks I still could not believe how much flex there was in the bristles.
Very uncharacteristic compared to all of the other Two-bands I've tried. For me, at least, this was a disappointment.

Curious to see how the wider knots in the (hopefully) upcoming XL 2-band Rooneys fare. Should be inherently stiffer, but at what cost?

Exactly! Larger, denser knots and shorter lofts.
This is what has me hopeful for the XL series - it's like Jim has been reading all of the negative posts I make about the current Heritage hair and decided to specifically design a brush that would remedy all of my complaints! :biggrin1:

Gents, I have a Rooney Silvertip 1/1 and really dislike the brush... How do the bristles compare with this rooney compared to a standard silvertip?
