So about 2 weeks ago, the day before my vacation, I was shaving with my Merkur 34C open comb (I think that's what it was). That was the first razor I ever bought that wasn't made of plastic. Unfortunately, I dropped it. It hit at just the right angle so that the center screw popped off. So...off to the local and only men's store in town as we left out for the vacation. I ended up purchasing a Parker 71R.
I'd love to tell you it was a knowledgeable, measured purchase. Truth is, I bought it because it had a black handle and was one of the lesser expensive ones. I couldn't find a Merkur there that I wanted to shell out for. I'm glad I did though.
This razor has shaved me as smooth as the Merkur, but with a lot less irritation and no nicks. I used to nick periodically on the Merkur and thought it was a bit rough. Haven't had that issue with this one. I did notice that I shave more often with it, but I don't feel the irritation I did with the Merkur when I used it daily. So all in all, a good purchase and a nice surprise.
I will leave it to those in the know to educate me as to why I like this razor better since I'm sure they know the science and the products in more depth than I do. And I would welcome the input. In any event, I would recommend this razor, especially to a first timer. It appears very forgiving.
