What's new

new outlook.com email service

I'm trying the new free email service from Microsoft, outlook.com, which replaces Hotmail and integrates with Skype and Skydrive and Calendar.

Well the first impression is that they copied Google (gmail and calendar) a lot, but they improved on it! It's a little bit slow, at least from overseas :) but the calendar is well made, and the email writing panel it's really cool.

Did you try it already? What are your thoughts?

I read your post and upgraded. It seems easier to use, although I rarely use it anymore. I am firmly established with Yahoo so I can navigate it well. I'm not saying Yahoo is the best; it's just more familiar for me.

Just went over and took a test drive. MUCH better than Hotmail. I always felt Hotmail was too "busy" looking. I only use the hotmail account for online stuff like forums and what have you. This new outlook.com interface may change some of that. If they get a free calling app like googlemail it would be REAL interesting. And yeah, I know about the Skype thing but right now, a phone call in Google is about two clicks away. Download and instal the google voice plugin, log into googlemail, click make call. Done. Sounds nice too.

Sweet they upgraded my spam dumping ground. Does anyone actually use it or does everyone use it as their spam dump?

I'm using it, and I love it. I scrambled to get the address I wanted, which is simply my name; I could never get an ID on GmailI liked (they had all been claimed). It works with Apple Mail just fine, and the mobile Outlook is easy to use on my iPad. I'm a fan so far.

I got 2 addys that I wanted. I like the look. It looks like MS Outlook. I may start using it as well. I hope they come up with an Android app for it.

Hey lads. Good idea about grabbing your name for this service. It keeps it from being mined for nefarious uses by others or spambots. I grabbed one other email addy I use on another service as well. If that proves confusing I think like hotmail you can delete the account and the associated user name. This new interface is outstanding. I am surprised Microsoft didn't go with this name and look to begin with. Methinks the email would would be a lot different these days.

I haven't used my hotmail account in so long that they canceled it; I dumped them a long time ago for Google, Microsoft is just too slow at innovating these days, there are much easier and better options.

Has anyone used the skype integration and can comment further? When I first heard about this feature, I expected that everyone with a skype account immediately had the ability to send/receive email on outlook as well. But from the brief description I saw it sounded the other way around, as if outlook would support directly making skype calls, but unclear if that required a separate skype client to be installed and running as well.

The Skype integration works similarly to Google's Talk implementation. You can run Skype from within your email window without having to have Skype running. Not sure if it requires a plug in like GTalk does.

My understanding is the Skype integration is not ready yet. And when it is, it will use a plugin at first. Even though MS and everyone else seems to finally see the writing on the wall for all this plugin madness and are finally working to get it done in HTML5. Don't ask me for specifics. I am just an observer on this sort of stuff. I don't know what makes HTML5 "tick" in the sense that it will simplify things. I have just heard it is to be a good thing.

Converting hotmail accounts to outlook.com For those who have tried this feature can you tell me if I am doing it right? I converted my old homtail account to outlook.com. When I log in I still have to use the @hotmail.com login. I have seen what to me is conflicting information about this. I have seen it said you will be directed via link to site that lets you keep all your old mail in a new folder and that your mail name is not changing or whatever. I cannot quite figure out if they mean a new account(all new [email protected] with forwarded old hotmail account) or if you can actually change the name to outlook of current accounts. I am just unsure. Personally I would love to end the @hotmail.com ending to my account. I use it for web forums like B&B so it is not for a lot of personal communication. It just sounds gimmicky which is a legit complaint about Hotmail. It supposedly takes a few days but I was never directed to a link. Whether it was when I changed the hotmail account or set up two new ones. Thanks.
