New Orleans recommendations

I'm heading to New Orleans tomorrow for 4 days. Any recommendations for restaurants or other things to do?

I grew up in Slidell. Def the Port Market(flea/vendor/antique/craft/cultural art market. And the aquarium is one of the best I've seen.

The high end restuarants are seemingly all great and almost without end, so it is a matter of collecting them as you have the chance. A place that is absolutely soul satisfying is called The Gumbo Shop

As far as nice places go, I have eaten at Galatorie's and Arnaud's and both are top notch!!!!

Bejeweled
Cafe Rani on Magazine for Lunch and Muriel's at Jackson Square for dinner.

The aquarium and zoo are both excellent.

If you like hamburgers, go to port o call in the french quarter, on esplenade st. Best burger i've evert eaten. Great drinks as well.

EDIT; nevermind you are probably gone by now.

The only prob with Port O Call is the line to get in can be pretty long. Their burgers are great, but I don't like waiting in line.

Just as good... Bud's Broiler on City Park and Toulouse. If you avoid the lunch rush, it's a good bet.

I hear you on the line thing. I would usually go to the bar and get a monsoon, and it made the wait muuuch better. Those things will get ya sneaky drunk. Never been to buds but I will give it a try next time i'm there.

Thanks for the suggestions. New Orleans is like Paris, you can't go wrong. We did Cafe Du Monde a couple of times, for the Begneits. The Muffeleta sandwich at Central Grocery was great. fried Chicken at Willie Mae's Scotch House was as good as I've ever had.

The Gumbo House was good, as suggested by BobS. On the higher end August (a John Besh restaurant) had a great lunch special - $22 for a 3 course prize fix.

I can't wait to back.

Was just watching The Originals With Emeril & he was in New Orleans. That was one of the places he mentioned, I was interested to see their coffee has chicory in it. How was the begneits? On the programme it looked like they swamped them with powdered sugar.

Emeril also has a couple or more restaurants down in New Orleans. I have not been to them, but I'm sure they are solid restaurants. I will say the begneits are good down there, but you are right, they are swamped with powdered sugar. You have to make sure you're not inhaling while you are eating them. Yes that was awkward to type, with out getting out of hand.

It's a fun place, and a place that is considered a "must visit" though.

Swamped is the understatement of the century. More like they nestled those perfect pillows of goodness inside a blanket to keep them safe. The secret is to gently tap them with a spoon after taking them from the plate or fear wearing most of the sugar. Then, if so inclined, sweeten your Cafe au Lait with the extra. Their french roasted coffee and chicory is legendary if you like it. I brew it daily, I have cases shipped to my house up here in Western NY just because I love the richness so much. There is no substitute for cold brewed coffee and chicory with a hint of pure vanilla extract.

Here is the list of the places featured on Emerils show.
