What's new

New guy needs to know: which blade?

I finally got the bulk of my DE kit today in the mail. I bought from bestgroomingtools and they send along three five packs of Lord blades. I have the Super Stainless, Super Chrome, and Platinum Class sitting here. I haven't seen too much talk about the Lord blades on here (except for that thread about the ripoff versions), so I was looking for some advice for my first shave. I planned on ordering a sampler from Shaving Essentials along with the ToBS sampler pack, but I am still waiting for the cream sample to get back in stock.

In the mean time, I wanted to get started with these Lords, but could use an opinion on which version to try first. Thanks guys.

I never tried any Lord blades, some love them, some hate them. Check the reviews, that would be one of the best inputs.

Same can be said about most blades. It is really a personal choice as far as blades so enjoy the ride of experimentation. Welcome to our own little wikipedia of shaving..:wink2:

Welcome to B&B, blade choice is whatever agrees with your face. I finally used the Lord blades that I had sitting from a sampler that I recieved just like yours the last time I ordered something from bestgroomingtools. For me the blades weren't that bad, but weren't that good either. I'd say for me they were just sharp enough to get the job done and not Irritate my face too much in the process. As for the TOBS cream I love the avacado and lavender, goodluck!

I've tried the Super Stainless and the Platinum. They're quality blades, but not my blade. I found the Platinum to be sharper. If you're new to DE shaving, you may want to try the Super Stainless first. It's probably more forgiving of mistakes, but you may have some pulling and dragging.
You will definitely nick yourself if you make a mistake with the Platinum Class.

The order of quality is supposedly:
1. Platinum Class
2. Super Chrome
3. Super Stainless

I have tried the Platinum Class, and the Super Stainless. The Super Stainless ripped my face up, leaving me with many weepers.

The Platinum Class are a fairly good quality blade, but at their price point I prefer the Personna Red Box blades. :001_tongu

Sample pack is the best bet. Whichever blade works best for you. I have read about rave reviews about the Red Personna blades. They don't work well for me. Best I can get is 3 days worth of use from them. So far, Dorco blades have been my go to blade giving the best shave and lasting any where from 5 to 7 shaves.

Well I am only two shaves in, but I had a good first shave with the Platinum blade. Only nicked myself a bit on the chin. I used a Chrome the second shave, and had to break out the styptic. Of course, I couldn't tell if it was bad technique or the blade, but I did feel like I had a bit more "drag" than the night before. I would say my lather both nights was about the same.

I placed an order yesterday with WCS for one of the more robust sampler packs. So we'll see how those turn out.

Welcome!

You'll find your blade, but you're going to have to experiment. I didn't think there could be that much difference between blades, but I could really tell a difference as I worked through the sampler pack. And others' recommendations don't matter a whole lot. I found that a lot of the blades (Derby, Feather, Red IPs) that the guys on here rave about just didn't work for me. You'll have to let your face give you the recommendation.

Imho the Lord Super Stainless/ Platinum is one of the best blades you can get.

Agreed! :thumbup1:

One use and you will be reaching for the Magic Shave powder!!! :wink2:

As one of the few survivors of your Satan's Smoothest I have to agree on the 'unique'-part; you laid hands on something very special indeed, but not necessarily very good I am afraid!

Though I love the Lords that is the best you could do; good luck in your search!

I've managed to get some good shaves out of the Platinum and Super Stainless. The Chrome felt like it was dragging. Maybe I will try them again in the future once my technique is improved. Until then, I will work through the sampler pack I just received today and throw in some Lords. Just came on here tonight to try and figure out what to pick first. I think I might try the legendary Derby to kick off the sampler.
