What's new

New car! Well sort of....

Gents,
I haven't been active on the board lately. Been too busy renovating the house. My 1998 BMW M3 w/175,000 miles was leaking some oil, it was the rear main seal, so got that fixed, while they were doing that got a new clutch, new hi performance stewart water pump. On the suggestion of my buddy, I took out the restrictive factory paper filter and put in an ITG foam filter insert. I could feel power immediately. It was time to rekindle our relationship, so I decided to get a new short shifter and a new exhaust for it. Not too loud, but louder than stock. I went with the Milltek Sport. They retail for about $1500 in the US, but I used the skills I learned on the board and ordered in from the UK. It cost me $600 plus $200 for 3 day shipping to my home. I had some trouble installing it bec the new pipes were bigger than the old. So I went to a special muffler shop that has a Mandrel bending machine - a machince that stretches the pipe while it bends so there are no wrinkles or ripples. When I got there the dude told me that I have 4 catalytic converters, so I won't feel the power. He told me to get rid of them and put in 2 new hi flow ones. So I got 2 Magnaflow ones put in that are 400 cell each. 400 cell has about 65% flow, 200 cell has 85% flow and 100 cell has 90% flow. Well, my car is no longer the same old M3, I feel like I got a new car. Definitely freed up the horses that were restricted. She takes off now, I can do 80-90 in 3rd gear and she's still buckin for more. Where as before she was gasping for air and constipated at the same time. So now, I think I am gonna get the 100 cell cats.

Here are some videos of it: You may have to wear headphones to appreciate the sound.

As a huge BMW fan. I deeply respect your E36 M3. Definitely a great car! Great raw road feeling and not as bloated feeling as my E92. We don't have inspection in my state so second set of cats are gone on my E92 3er.

Once you start modding though...it's extremely difficult to stop.

Thanks!
We don't have inspection in my state also. But I want to do my part for the environment. If these 400 cell cats can free up this much hp, then 100 cell cats will definitely be worth it.
My future mods will be HID lights, they are cheap now. Then maybe the headers and the tuning software to go with it from Active Autowerke.

It's a damn shame what they do to these cars.

Blame regulation and doing it for the name of reliability. With mods comes risk, so I suppose you should expect some. I find Active Autowerke to be a bit on the expensive side, so perhaps you may be HIDs are always great, though I think E36s look a little strange with halos.

If you are going to pay AA prices, have you considered Dinan? Most of their work is warrantied similarly to BMW and

I sure hope you hang onto your car for a good long time, the E30 and E36 M3s are some of the best cars for drivers.

I agree. There are risks. But its not like I am putting in a supercharger to give 600 hp. Just a little bit to give it that kick. Yep, Ive ben told that my car is in great shape so I'll be keeping it for a long time. I dont race or anything, but on the highway, when its not raining and no traffic, I would like to open it up. To be honest, I am satisfied with the work know, but the new 100 cell cats would be nice. So I dont know if I'll go through with the headers. I don't think Dinan has the headers, only a supercharger which i dont want.

Congrats! I wish more people would put a little effort into their current rides - you can really improve a car instead of taking on yet another monthly payment.

Dinan has some nice software tunes to fully take advantage of an exhaust. AA is the same way.

If you enjoy opening your car up on the highway, I recommend you take a spin on the track. It isn't as daunting as you think it is and it is truly a BLAST. My Hoosier Chapter of the BMWCCA usually hosts track events and they are for people of all skill levels. Most of the time these are free with free helmet loan too.

It feels like I got a whole new machine once I better learned the limits of my car.

Yeah I have to do that then. I've been a member of BMWCCA for 11 yrs, but havent had the ability to partake in the events due to school and exams.

I talked to one of the AA dealers, he said I can get the headers for $1100, $365 to install it, and $300 for the software. With the AA headers, it cancels the secondary air pump. Their software takes care of that to prevent the CEL and it also deletes the 2 post cat O2 sensors. I live in FL, he told me since we have no emissions, most people go catless.

How fast have you taken your car on the track?

Those are some very worthwhile mods--and not all that expensive for the additional performance they provide.

Agree. I'm looking forward to some mods on my GTI once the payment is up.
