Netflix box?

Anybody have a netflix box? My DVD player just went out. So I am trying to decide if I should get a Netflix box and subscription or buy a new blueray player? Any input would be appreciated.

Of course it comes down to personal preferences, but have you considered getting a media center PC? It does Netflix and a ton of other entertaining tasks all in one. MCE interface of Windows 7 is very good and it has a very easy "wife adoption" factor. This is what I have as mine:

Comes in different colors to fit the decor and they are very small boxes.

PS. If you are into gaming Xbox 360 and PS3 stream Netflix as well.

I put in the Roku box a few months back...works very well. We aren't big on video games so the X-Box, PS3 options did not interest us. The Blu-Rays players that stream netflix were considered but in the end we went with Roku. The entire family enjoys Roku.

I would recommend getting a blue-ray player as many have the capability to stream Netflix. While many titles are available to stream....many are not, especially newer releases so you will still need something you can watch dvds or blue-rays on if you get movies delivered to your home. Plus the blue-ray picture is awsome!

Our TV is an older 720P so we chose the Roku HD box but felt there was no need to go the Blu-Ray route. A co-worker does have streaming Blu-Ray player and loves it. I think it boils down to the level of technology you have or desire to have.

Since you said you were looking into getting Netflix subscription, I'll assume you don't have one already.

I don't have a Netflix box, but I do have an Xbox 360 and a PS3, both of which I stream Netflix through.

There are a ton of movies/TV shows you can stream. Most of them are older. They do have some new movies out. I use streaming a lot to catch up on movies I never saw because I was too young or just missed them years ago. It's great if you're in the mood for a movie of a particular genre and aren't too picky and don't want to wait for a disc.

That said, there are also tons of movies and TV shows only available on disc. And a lot of stuff is split up. Frequently you can watch the first couple seasons of a TV show instantly streaming but the later seasons will only be on Disc.

If I were you, I'd get a Blu-Ray/DVD drive with Netflix streaming. Some movies that are only on disc are still only available on DVD. Plus to get Blu-Ray discs you pay an extra 2 bucks a month on top of your plan price, so if you don't want to do that you'll need another DVD player.

To take full advantage of Netflix you have to have a disc player and something to stream to.

I would get a Blu-ray player that can stream movies. Personally, I just stream on my laptop and play DVDs on my Xbox 360.

I've been using the Roku box for over a year now and it's been excellent. The wi-fi G model worked very good and the new XR wi-fi N model works excellent. I'm not sure the players with the built-in Netflix viewers have access to the additional channels that the Roku box can access. Though they may. I changed my subscription from three-discs to one-disc which saves me $10 a month and has paid for the Roku box.

Also I've really enjoyed my Pioneer Elite BDP-05 Blu-ray player. One of the reason I chose this model was that I also wanted an excellent CD transport for my D/A converter. I would recommend one of the following Oppo players; BDP-80B or DP-80BDP-80.

I have a Samsung blu-ray player that gets Netflix. So far, we've gotten a fair bit of use out of it. Maybe two out of every three movies that I look for are unavailable, but it's getting better. My kids have better luck--use it to watch old TV shows on the weekend.

Mine is wireless, and I had heard about how difficult it is to use it with a Mac Airport. It took me about five minutes to get it up and running. I'm not exactly a technophobe, but it wasn't very hard to do.

So from what i am reading, If I am not interested in watching mostly older movies there is really not much value in the netflix box.

I would try the Netflix free for a month trial. See what they have and if you decide not to extend the subscription you are out nothing but a little time.

I have a Samsung BR player that can stream Netflix, Youtube, Pandora and Blockbuster. I signed up for Netflix and have been really happy with it. The streaming quality is pretty good, and I am able to catch up on alot of movies that I missed since kids arrived. When I finally get through my queue, I'll decide if I want to continue the subscription. I would recommend this route also.

Not sure if you need to be a member to do so, but you can check the netflix website to see what movies are available for streaming. We mostly watch TV shows and older movies that way, because we can't get an HD stream through our crappy internet. New movies all come in on bluray disc.

We chose to get the Roku box for Netflix as opposed to cable or satellite. We have loved it in the month we have had it. There are a few newer shows (legend of the Seeker and Heroes) that are on there, including the current season, as well as the older stuff. There are a growing number of free and pay channels that are going through the Roku now, and Pandora is the better than any of the satellite music stations IMHO. There is a growing supply of History Channel, TLC, PBS, and other documentary type stuff, as well as the TV shows and movies. I think it is well worth it.

For the most part, streaming is only good for TV shows and some classic movies, such as Casablanca.

I don't find that statement to be accurate. My instant queue is loaded with a good mix of foreign, drama, comedy, horror and documentary flicks, both classic and contemporary. And the selection is continuously improving.

I have the Roku Netflix box. It was very easy to install and I have no complaints with it. I do wish there was more of a selection for movies you can stream on Netflix. You can use the same box to purchase movie downloads from Amazon.

If you have a Nintendo Wii you will soon be able to watch Netflix movies on that as well.
