I have a Water of Ayr on the way. Never lapped. Any advice as to what plate/grit will be best to get it ready as a finishing stone?

I did mine up to 600 wet/dry sandpaper.
I think I finished mine on 1200 w/d. Might have been 1500. I liked it a little better than 600, which is what I did first.
Worn 400, or 600, or 1200, or rub with another stone.

I forgot to mention, I dressed it with a coticule bout afterwards.
400 Atoma works fine. You can run a knife over it a few times if you want to smooth further.

Thanks for the advice. Shall start with an Atoma 400 (far from worn but I'm thinking it'll get things underway) and see from there. Maybe move to a DMT 1200...
If you have a typical black one with ink spots, just lap it till there are no felt scratches. Visible scratches that are not felt will likely disappear during honing.
