What's new

Need a new brush

Well after a few months of using my VDH boar brush, I am starting to loose bristles and need a new brush. I think I am going to try a best badger. MY budget is about $30-$40 and no more than 50 max. What would recommend? Also if you have a recommendation for something other than best badger, that is welcomed too.

I'd get a 24mm TGN Extra Stuffed Finest knot set at about 50mm. They have a couple options on handles, and if you set the knot yourself it should be at about that $50 price.

The Edwin Jagger Small Best Badger used to get great reviews. I had one and it worked great. I later gave it to my father in law as a way of initiation.

Al raz.

Simpsons Berkeley 46 Best. It is a fantastic little brush, price is $ 49 at WCS.

Or you could post in the WTB forum. You can get terrific deals there.

I have bought 3 different brushes there and liked them all.

This is going to be my first badger and I am trying to find out what I want and what will last.

My Boreal 322:cursing: blew out the center of the knot last Monday(2 clumps, about 100 hairs left a nice hole), I just ordered a couple of Omegas; Omega #40033 $6.99, Ht: 88 mm Loft: 48 mm Base: 40 mm Knot: 23 mm; Omega #11575 - Matte Satin Chrome Boar with Orange Pizazz $11.99, Ht: 106 mm Loft: 56 mm Base: 50 mm Knot: 23 mm, + 5.99 S&H.

Looking forward to breaking them in, I mainly bowl lather with Tabac SS:001_tt1: or La Toja SC.

Right now I'm down to my Vie Long Horse Hair:thumbup:, nice little brush that gives me enough lather for three passes, just PIFed my Escali Badger :001_smile(Tweezerman twin) to a co- worker wanting to try wetshaving.

P.S. don'y like my Boars disguised as Badgers, Blond Bristles Only!!

I'll vote for a 24mm TGN Bulb finest as well. That knot is a great all arounder. I'd set it a little below 50mm though (anything 40-50mm should be great). Pick up a vintage handle in good shape or a burma shave brush ($7 brush, identical to vintage EverReady C40's) and grind it open enough to fit the knot with a dremel sanding/grinding drum, then glue that sucker in there. Treat it like you hate it for a few weeks and it'll break in to a beauty. Nice and soft with good badgery backbone.

If you expand your budget maybe $55-80, you can get a custom handle made by a turner/carver on forums (there are a few, Bullseye, Mycarver, Rudy Vey, etc) and have them put the knot in for you.

$90-100 and you're looking at a nice simpson (chubby 1, Duke 3, etc) in their excellent "Best" grade hair.

The knot in the brush you linked looks a lot like the Frank Shave brushes you'll see on eBay. They have a number of fans here and aren't bad for the price. I find them much less dense than I like, and a bit floppy. They work, but lack the luxury and performance of better brushes. They will give you a feel for how badger hair differs from boar though and make a decent stepping stone if you plan to save up for a $75+ brush.

I think I found my next brush. http://www.amazon.com/Bristle-Shaving-Parker-Safety-Razor/dp/B002RJC1HC/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t It just called to me. What do you think?

I would stick to one of the more highly regarded brush manufacturers.
Edwin Jagger, Simpsons, Rooney, Shavemac, etc are the most popular brushes on B&B for a reason - their brushes have great price-to-quality ratio and have been tried and tested by hundreds of different members here.

Your call, though.

Save your money and instead of buying a cheap brush go with a Silvertip first you won't regret it. When I first started I bought a few $25-$50 badger and boars brushes and wish I had gone with a nice Silvertip from the start. Some brands to look at Shavemac, Rooney, Simpsons, Edwin Jagger, Kent!

Its easy for everyone here to give their opinion, which can range from specific customs, buildings their own with a supplied knot, holding out for higher end Simpsons, Rooneys or Silvertips.

None of these really fit what he is looking for. Unfortunately, you just have to start somewhere and find what you like. Unlike all of us, we know exactly what we like. It may be that he will need is a simple $25-30 badger brush - for now.

My vote is for the EJ BBB... you can get it for $32 shipped free from TESC.com here.

Vie-long professional horse brush, either standard or extra (soft tips). Will come at some 20 usd shipped from Spain. See my reviews on them in the reviews section.

My FS brush is shedding like crazy:thumbdown

yet another suggestion....

contact fido at new forest brushes and see if he has any 2-band 2201's left. it's a smallish 2-band brush that is a great all-arounder with more than enough backbone for hard soaps and yet its soft enough to enjoy creams. no lather hogging with great flow and it costs (or did cost) under $50
