Yet another happy camper with WD service and products.
Larry usually ships the same day and it arrives within 3 days (barring usps hickups).
There was actually a mistake with my order and the brush I got had the wrong handle.
Larry's remedy was first off to keep the brush I got and choose between a refund or get a second one free of charge. In the splendid mood it put me I opted for the latter [ thank you Larry! ]
I originally ordered a 24mm silvertip at default 55mm loft. I face lather and the brush I recieved made me think that I might be better off with a shorter loft. Without thinking/researching too much I asked to have it drilled 10mm deeper and set it as 45mm loft.
I might have gone a tad overboard here but it actually works well for me. Here is how it looks (mistaken brush on left, second brush on the right).
From looks perspective it seems that I choked the life out of that knot but because the bristles are so soft when wet, this is makes for a very pleasing brush for face lathering, I get a nice facial massage and the brush foot print does not cover half a face. I noticed that if I soak it for a few minutes, it has an adverse effect on the backbone and overal behavior of the bristles, they become floppy and just too soft and I feel a bit of scritch.
If I just give it a good rinse with hot water and then load it with soap or cream I get an excellent face massage from the brush and no scritch at all. It can hold a ton of lather as long as I load it up accordingly.
Let me first say a few words about the knots. I am impressed. First off - out of the box the badger smell is not intense at all and by following his de-funk instrucitons it was almost completely gone, and after 2 lathers gone period. The knots lost 1-2 hairs during de-funking procedure and another 2 in the next two lathers and thats it.
I haven't tried any of the big names brushes. My other badger was tweezerman which I think was horrid (funk that won't go a way and prickly tips that makes the VDH boar seem luxirous). I am however quite pleased with this one. My other brushes are H.I.S, FS synthetic and Muhel hjm synthetic.
When I not using the WD, I usually reach for the FS.
So now I got the itch. If I had to do it again, I'd ask him not to glue it so i could experiment with differnet loft heights. Also, I thought that the bigger the knot the better but as I face lather, i think a smaller knot would have been better. I started to pay closer attention to width/loft on the different simpson models and I can see the logic there, granted they use slightly different material. But truth to be told, this brush serves me wonderfully and any money spent beyond this point would be feeding the SBAD dragon.
So for $29 you can get a good quality Silvertip brush, made to your spec and delivered in 3 days. What is there not to like?
