My Shaving Kit

Hi everyone, since I'm new here, I thought I'd go ahead and share the items that ma ke up my shaving kit. First, I have have a 1966 Gillette razor that has an adjustable dial ( what it does, I'm not sure:ohmy:) I also have a Thather brush, and Taylor of Old Bond Street Shaving cream. If anyone could tell me more about the razor, I would appreciate it! Any other comments would be welcome as well. $Shaving Kit 001.jpg

Your 1966 razor is a Gillette Slim Adjustable.

The razor is mildest when set at "1", and most aggressive when set at "9". Moving the dial adjusts the distance between the safety bar, and the blade. This is called the blade gap.

In general, a larger blade gap means the razor is more efficient, but it also means it has greater potential to cut you.

To start with, I would set the razor at a "4" or a "5".

To adjust, slightly loosen the doors, and then move the dial. Relock the doors, making sure to lock the bottom knob by giving it an extra 1/4 turn. You will see the blade gap physically increase as you move up the number scale.

contrary to popular belief, the adjustment can be changed without opening the razor. that quarter turn is a spring tensioning the head, it stretches to accomodate the adjustment. widely regarded as one of gilettes best, head is similar to a super speed.

You will need some blades if you want to shave. Looks like a great kit otherwise! Adjustable razors are great, but at the beginning try to treat it a non-adjustable by picking a low setting and getting good at the actual shaving part. Once you have the moves stored in your muscle memory you can explore the various settings. It's like having 9 razors in one. I have a Merkur Progress adjustable, which is a similar in idea, but very different design. There are no steps in the adjustment mechanism, so it's like having many more than 9 razors. I learned my technique on a modern Edwin Jagger DE89 razor and some vintage Gillettes including Super Speeds, which I really liked. Your razor is based on a Super Speed head, so it should be a great shaver. Find out what setting would correspond to a Flare tip Super Speed and start with that. It's nice and mild and allows you to perfect your routine. Once you feel comfortable take it up a notch. You may get a much closer more effortless shave or you may simply get a lot of irritation. If the latter happens, drop back down and stay there unless you are not getting good close shaves.

That is a nice set up. I use the same razor, but mine is from '67. Enjoy, you will get some great shaves from it!

Welcome to B&B! Great kit to start with. Slim adjustable is my go to safety razor- you can't go wrong with it. Just like previously stated 4-5 (maybe even 3 for first shave). Enjoy!

Thank you for the compliments everyone! The blades I have are some Wilkinson Sword blades I got at the grocery storea few months ago. In all, the total cost of the brush, cream, brush stand and scuttle came to about $ 78. Right now, I'm just trying to work on my lathering and not tearing my neck up.
