..my next razor.. a slim or fat boy?

greets, am ready to make the next DE jump from my HD to a merkur 23 to a gillette adjustable.. I favor the merkur 23 since I have large hands, would that make the slim the logical choice or is the fatboy just that much better...? Are the heads identical, and how easy to shave under the nose? Thanks!

Can't go wrong either way, but I love the look of the fatboy. It's THE classic gillette adjustable in my mind.

I believe that the Slim has a bit longer handle than the Fat Boy, and the head is not quite as massive either. The Slim is one of my favorite razors, and does quite well under the nose. I have yet to shave with a Fat Boy, although one made a brief stop in my bathroom last summer before moving on to another hangout...

Both shave great, the fatboy feels a little heftier. Personally, since I tried the red tip, I haven't used either of them. Just get one of each, your going to wind up getting them all anyway, RAD is hell.:biggrin1:

There is no wrong choice. Both are fine razors, the heads and feel are a bot different, but as in the tag line they can each be a bit of fun. :001_smile

As already said, you won't go wrong with either one. I prefer the Slim and use one at least 3 times a week. I like the little extra length in the handle. That is something you might want to consider. Last week I adjusted up from 3 setting to 4 and am getting awesome shaves on that setting.

sady I think you're right... though I may get a slim first, tis inevitable that I will prob get a fatboy as well... grin

Can I say neither? I too started on the HD. Went to a slim, then a fatboy, then a...you get the picture. I finally picked up a Slant and haven't used anything else since. I say Slant

why the slant? How aggressive is that compared to the HD in a practical sense?

Quite. And don't try the "Gillette Slide".
I get a BBS from my slant in 2 passes + touch up. But I always end up with irritation and usually a nick or three. Much of that might be the blade though, or my technique as I haven't been using it long and rotate it with my DE89L which is so smooth it invites careless habits. The HD took at least 3 passes regardless of blade or prep or anything else I could figure out.

I'd go for a slim or super adjustable (black handle) over the fatboy. Reason being they go for less $ and can be found in good condition more often. I'd avoid ebay for vintage razors, btw, especially adjustables as they can have mechanical and blade gap issues. Also avoid the late 70s supers with the black plastic plate underneath the razor head.

BTW, for shaving under the nose, I find the Jagger DE89L works better than old Gillettes. Reason being that the head is curved and the side blade tabs don't protrude out of the head like with old Gillettes. If you accidentally graze your nose with one of those side blade tabs it will hurt real bad.

Doesn't matter what you decide but there MUST be a place in your life for a Gillette adjustable.

Fatboy, Slim, Super Adjustable - short or long handled, again it doesn't matter as they are all great razors.

Even the "plastic" long handled Super Adjustable maligned in the post above is a good razor and gives great shaves. The long handle and plastic give it handling and balance very similar to a multblade dollar muncher but of course with far superior performance.:thumbup1:

If I was hesitant about buying an adjustable (I'm obviously not:001_cool:), this is what I'd go for.

Good Luck.

Looks like I will get a slim first, then probably a fatboy once I burn through a few shaves... I will probably avoid a slant if only because the HD was a little rough alone, I would rather have the capacity to dial down the aggressiveness to get that BBS shave without the irritation. Thanks to all, as always!

Go that way. It's what I did. You'll end up with a slant some day and wonder why it took you so long. Seriously, is the slant "aggressive"? I dunno, for me it's irritation free I never could get the hang of the HD. Next to the slant I'd pick the Fatboy.

I'd go with the Fatboy. It has a little more heft that allows the razor to do a little more of the work than the Slim. I gave my Slim away a few weeks ago, but it was not a bad razor. I liked it, but not as much as the Fatboy.

Then again, I keep rotating back to the DE89L. The Fatboy has been sitting longer than I thought it would.
