What's new

My new TI 7/8 Spanish Point

Gentlemen first let me say that I buy razors for the blade, doing what I do, we all knew I was planning on tearing the "Red Stamina Wood" scales off this blade before I ever saw them...

That being said TI still is having the same Quality Control problems as they always have, These scales are what we have seen from them for a long time now...

The scales are built crooked they are not close to being even, these pics are taken on the same glass stem as you have seen in almost all of my restores/customs... There is a crack in the finish on the back side scale near the pin, I see almost no angle to the wedge... You can see the off cant by the way the razor sits... These scales are totally not acceptable on any price point razor but at $240 they are a joke... NOT GOOD TI...

Now the blade, that is a different story... I see a near perfect grind and and a near perfect mirror finish the spine work is flawless even the etch is solid and straight....
The edge, although it looks a little rough passes my arm hair test, so I will try a shave in the morning to see where it is really at... But I am impressed with what I see so far...

Note my fingers in the pics because the scales are so badly made that the razor will not sit pretty for pics... Those pics we take as restorers tell quite a bit about the razors. First they tell the the razor is nice and tight if the blade stays open without anything stuck under the tang, they also show how straight the scales are made if the razor sits without leaning against anything with the blade half open... Always look for those freestanding pics from a restorer we don't just do them because they look cool...We are actually doing them to show off how exact our work is...

The balance is good BTW the feel of the razor is solid and the action opening and closing is not bad...

This is kinda tuff...

Is it "Shave Ready" ????

Technically yes you can shave with it, there is one problem that won't pass anyone's definitition... Right under the AN in Warranted there is a rough spot.. It looks to me that the razor was raked on the corner of the stone with a little to much angle on an X stroke... The rest of the blade is shave-able but you have to work around that spot...
It did pass the ATG test on the neck first stroke that I use as a true gage. The problem is I have honed to many TI's, I know what the edges are capable of, and this one is not too it's full potential yet... Next question would logically be could I pull the edge into line using just the TI paste and a strop ?????
On this razor NO, without the rough patch I could get it a bit better then it is now.... I still would re-hone it...

Once you've honed this blade to your satisfaction, you will get a great shave. It's too bad about the scales, I will look at my snakewood scales tonight for symetry.

Congrats and enjoy the blade in good health.

I have always wanted that blade... it looks great... I would love it even more if they took out the gold plating et all or did a better job with it.
TI scales sometimes do leave a bit to be desired but all in all the steel MORE than makes up for all the other little kinks

Hi - oddly enough it was the box that took my attention. The stock code isn't one that's to be found in the 2009 price list (or the 2008 for that matter). The nearest I can find is code HDOSFESTL-6/8-188-A-NCR which translates to 'Historic forged decorated back 6/8-7/8" razor, hollowed, 'long' decoration with hooked nose' (the decoration depends on the dealer and can be one of several). The scales are snakewood for the model as listed but of course red stamina can be had, when the code is slightly different but certainly not the same as the one on the box shown. I have had recent stock of this blade in red stamina and bone and the scales were spot on - as were the blades. I have heard that there is still quite a bit of old stock wandering around the US.

Maybe this one is from TI's less-than-golden age?

(BTW you were lucky to get it still sealed - on nearly every one I've had the seal has peeled open - the card of the box doesn't seem to 'take' the adhesive too well!)

TY Steve for weighing in, it is good to hear from somebody that sees even more of these than I do... and I have heard your Customer Service is second to none so I bet yer checking yours too...

Here is the flip side of the coin though, I had three TI's go through my hands this past 10 days mine and two others, the straightest of the bunch had the black plastic scales... That razor had more than 1/2 inch between the toe of the razor and the wedge  The Olivewood Newer TI was the best of the three with visually straight scales yet oddly it would not sit straight either it seems that one scale was slightly larger then the other where they curve downward leaving an uneven bottom.... Now you also have to understand that I am now looking at them all rather closely....

None of the three had any blade issues....

Hi again -

how about this -

"My Thiers-Issard arrived like the queen of France. What a gorgeous
razor. Thanks for checking it out thoroughly before sending it out. It
looks to be in perfect shape. This is going to be my Sunday shaver. I
can't wait. I'll give you a report on how it shaves........This morning I had my first shave with the razor. One word: magnificent. That razor is not only gorgeous, but is also an incredibly sharp and smooth shaver."

A customer's words, not mine! He goes on a bit more but I'm a modest guy - anyway, the point here is that he and another customer ordered this same razor (7/8 historic) and asked pointedly that I inspect them carefully as they both had had quality problems. Both are US customers. Maybe TI are now finally laying to rest that problem!
