What's new

My new Dovo tortoise razor

I have a number of razors that I use regularly including a TI, a Puma, a Dovo stainless, and a couple of Sheffield's. I just NEEDED another razor but didn't have a lot of change so I grabbed a 6/8 Dovo Tortoise from SRD while it's on sale.

What a sweeeeet razor!!! The shank has jimps on both sides, it's substantial and shaves like a dream. So much for a "beginner's razor". Just a wonderful blade.

I have had this suspicion that the carbon blades are better than the stainless, and this one is certainly helping me believe it. My Dovo Inox shaves nicely, but isn't in the same league as my Kropp Sheffield or my TI silversteel and even the Tortoise blows it away. Anybody else feel like their carbon blades do a better job than their stainless?

I am sure i will get a lot of responses that say it isn't sharp, but that's just not the case. I have spent a lot of time with the Inox and the blade is plenty sharp and polished. It cuts very easily but it just seems to be a lot harder on my face 9relatively speaking) than the other razors.

They are nice razors. I gave mine to my son-in-law, and I like him :w00t:

Kropp is an excellent but under appriciated brand.

I currently own two stainless razors, a brace of Weltmeisters that are off being rescaled. I've tried several brands stainless razors, although not a Dovo 41, and the Weltmeisters are the best shaving stainless I've found so far. As smooth as carbon steel blades.

I just ordered two Dovo's from SRD, one 6/8" and one 5/8". Both are carbon blades so it looks like I ordered the right ones. Can't wait for them to arrive.

Good choice. :thumbup1: I love the tortoise shell scales on these. I bought a few different vintage blades from the bst board instead of the new Dovo, but I'll probably break down and get a new one next year, once my cashflow improves.

I don't think the Dovo Tortoise is a beginner razor. The Best Quality is a beginner razor and only because its plain jane and relatively inexpensive for a new blade.

I used to think carbon steel was smoother and better than stainless, but have come to realize that is not the case.

I have two straights that I really like: Dovo Renaissance, and 6/8 Dovo Special Tortoise. I really would choose them (and do) over my B&B Le Grelot Pink Ivory LE, which I guess I really should sell.
Ken.

The Renaissance is stainless isn''t it? I need to send my Inox back to SRD to see if they hone it again, maybe it will be smoother. It gives a good shave, but like I said it's just a bit harsh whereas my carbon blades all seem to be smooth as silk.

You can send me the Rennaissance and I'll see how smooth I can get it. ;) No one's sent me one yet, want to see it in person.
