Nice scuttle. Are there any makers/importation marks on the base? The symbolism is a little puzzling, a bare-breasted (well one of them is bare) Indian maiden (she's a maiden 'til proven guilty) in a war bonnet unfurling Old Glory. It's the kind of art that you'd find on old cigar boxes. Mild eroticism wrapped in romanticism and partriotism. And if the lady of the house were to be incensed by the pin-up gal you just turn her to the wall and display the flowers. Just love it to death. The perfect gentleman's accessory.
I'm confused about the holes in the cup area. Wouldn't the soap/cream just run down the holes into the water below?
I guess this falls into the category of real shaving porn, huh?
There was something vaguely familiar about that image but I just couldn't recall what it reminded me of. Then late last night it came to me, Eugene Delacroix's painting "Liberty Leading the People". It features a bare-breasted woman brandishing the Tricolor flag and a musket with a fixed bayonet as she leads an armed mob over the the bodies of the tyrant's slain soldiers and fallen revolutionaries. I don't know if that was the inspiraton for it. Congratulations that's a great piece of pottery!I looked for markings and unfortunately there aren't any. It is definitely a puzzling piece. Flowers on one side and a half nude indian holding the American flag on the other.

Awesome scuttle! Oh, the holes are there to allow water from the wet brush to run through. It's not like the modern scuttles and you'd need a hard soap. It's a fun novelty to use and were popular during the days of no hot running water.

It's an old style scuttle, where a smallish soap puck is placed in the area with the holes. The brush is set in the end area to soak up hot water, then loaded on the puck of soap and face lathered. The holes allow the water to drain back into the scuttle so the soap doesn't get "squishy", and the area above the handle is a place to rest the loaded brush between pass latherings.!
When eroticism comes to this country, it will be wrapped in the flag and.... Oh, wait- wrong quoteNice scuttle. Are there any makers/importation marks on the base?
