What's new

My first visit to a bricks & mortar shaving shop

Yesterday I drove down to Medina, Ohio (about 50 minutes away) and visited straightrazordesigns.com, aka Imperial Shaving. It is a large, modern, very attractive, well-stocked shop run by a very nice guy named Don Addleman. Don was helpful but not pushy - a gentleman. He has a large stock of all (well, most) of our favorite British and Italian products and some others I'd never heard of. I came close to buying a tub of shaving cream called Xpec - it's even more expensive than Castle Forbes, but was highly recommended by Don. Instead, I bought a tube of Penhaligon's Endymion cream and a large hand-thrown, rather rustic-looking shaving mug.

I didn't even look at his razors since I am already overloaded with razors.

His prices are about the same as the other on-line retailers - generally within a few dollars of the best prices I found on-line - and even a few bucks cheaper on some items. Even though I'll end up paying sales tax, I expect that I will be visiting him again soon. I like supporting small, local businesses.

I wish my local shop stocked what they carry online. Their selection of wet shaving goods on the shelf are limited. I keep asking but every time I go in, it is the same stock and minimal selection.

I guess they have a large enough volume with woman's products that they don't care about wet shaving products. Sure they are willing to get in any item I want but nothing beats touching them before buying.

I went there yesterday and did purchase the Xpec. Incredible stuff! I was so impressed with Don's shop, Imperial Shave. I took some pictures. Mind you, these photos don't include everything. In particular, I didn't snap the razor displays.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???!!! I wish I had something like that on my neck of the woods  Truly amazing selection!

That Cella section looks good!

Droool!

I've resigned myself to online ordering in my neck of the woods. My excitement consists of how interesting a vendor's site is. Bestshave.net is probably the most entertaining with it's quirkiness, typos and all.

This shop makes Cleveland, Ohio one of my favorite places to travel now. It is a short drive south on 71 from the airport. Needless to say, my jaw has rug burns from dragging it around that shop.

Woah! Very impressive! I have read very favorable reviews of the Xpec cream, but you should post your impressions because there are not that many reviews of it on here.

Very cool, thanks for sharing the story and especially the pictures. I hope you all know that Don Addleman and Lynn Abrams founded Straight Razor Place (forum) and Straight Razor Designs (the shop). Without these two guys as well as Charles Roberts (method shaving) and Mantic, traditional wetshaving would not have reached the popularity it has recently. They and a few others really have pioneered the wetshaving movement as we know it today. Good stuff!!

Awesome for sure! I may have to stop there on my way to PA in the fall...we go through Cleveland so it shouldn't be to far out of the way. Can't wait!

No kidding. Without these Titans, people interested in learning about wetshaving would probably have to turn to large community-based forums where members would rely on one another for help and advice. Oh, wait... :biggrin1:
