My first vintage razors

Hi everybody!

I've been lurking these forums for about a year without registering, so I'll start off with a little introduction of myself. I live in sweden and though I have been a wetshaver ever since I started shaving, it wasn't before last summer that I got myself a de razor. The razor I bought was a Merkur 23C and I have really enjoyed shaving with it. During this year I have bought a lot of shaving stuff, but no more razors since I have been satisfied with my Merkur. Lately, however, I have become more and more curious about trying some vintage razors.

So earlier this week i stopped into one of the local antique stores to see if they had any razors. I didn't expect too much, but they did have two swedish de razors which were in very good shape. The first one was a Matador Razette and the second one was a Clipper De Luxe. I have seen Matador razors on the internet before but I have never heard about Clipper and I have not been able to find any info about it.

Thought I would share some pics of the razors with you.

First of all, welcome to B&B!

Secondly, thanks for the pictures. They gave me much more info on the Matador than I have ever had. The references I have seen before had them associated with Solingen, Germany, but the printing on the baseplate is clearly Swedish. I have never been able to read the whole string to identify it before.

precisionsrakhyvel = accuracy razor

I seem to remember having seen Clipper blades, but have never seen the Clipper razor. The head design is very similar to the Matador and I wouldn't be surprised if they had the same manufacturer. Blade companies commonly sold razors under the same brand name as their blades. Matador and Clipper blades may have been produced by the same company.

I am curious as to how the two piece mechanism works on the Clipper. Does the whole handle twist at the lower part of the neck to remove the cap?

The whole handle including the neck twist. When the cap is removed, the other part of the head is not fixed on the handle. You can spin it but not deattach it from the handle. Hope that my explanation makes any sense to you! Otherwise just give me a shout and I'll explain better.

Nope. That explains it perfectly. I was just wondering where the swivel point was. In any case, that is a nice find of two vintage razors that appear to be NOS (New Old Stock).

I haven't found much information on the Matador and none regarding the Clipper. They are both made in sweden according to the boxes and the printing on the baseplate of the Matador. Your translation of "precisionsrakhyvel" is completely correct by the way.

welcome to the b/b...nice pics, how much did you pay?

I paid almost exactly $10 a piece for them (80 sek).
The original pricing in print on the Matador box says 1.50 sek ($0.19).

I have been shaving with these razors a couple of times since I bought them and I will review them when I have tried them out some more.
